In Rosa's "The Three Caballeros ride again" they both have their
original names in the German translation.

In the only Rosa story where it was mentioned ("Mythological
Menagerie") they translated it with "Wanderv?gel" - I think that name
was used earlier in some Fuchs-translations, too.

Have to admit, "Mickey Mouse in Color" and the Gladstone Mickey comics were
incomplete efforts at best, and never meant to be (or eventually achieve)
definitive collections of Gottfredson. There was always the hope of doing
something of that sort, but, as with our abandoned Taliaferro collection,
too many obstacles lay in the path of doing it right.

The obstacles to doing the original Carl Barks Library "right" might have
dissuaded us from attempting it, too, except that it was the learning
experience that taught us the realities of doing such things. As it was
perceived (rightly or wrongly, though comics sales strongly indicated
rightly) that the audience for Gottfredson wasn't as sizeable it was for
Barks, and as we knew we would get far more interference from Disney and
have to put in a great deal more production effort on the material, the
numbers and the expectations just didn't come out in favor of a Floyd
Gottfredson Library.

Let's hope that one day that picture will change, and it will happen. Dreams
are good.

Some id's for Tony:

18.The Case Of The Soccer Tickets US 23
=
S 66108

26.Goofy And The Magic Omelette MM&GO 17
=
W DDBP 1-05

I suspect most of the longer stories to be of Italian production. For
example, based on the titles and the number of pages:

1.The Vanishing Ship Mystery DD 22
sounds like
I AT 58-A (Paperino e la nave scomparsa)

5.Thumbprint Key BB,DD,US 24
=
I AT 78-C (Zio Paperone e l'impronta chiave)

9.The Pride Of Duckburg US 28
probably is
I AT 110-B (Zio Paperone e la trasvolata del triplano, but the title of the
German reprint matches exactly the Australian one)

10.Pearl Island US 28
=
I AT 129-B (Paperino e l'isola delle perle)

12.The Fifty Money Bins Caper US 24
=
I AT 118-A (Zio Paperone e i 50 depositi)

15.The Trojan Horse BB,DD,US 22
=
I AT 68-B (Paperino e il cavallo di Troia)

16.The Three Mostest DD 29
=
I AT 120-B (Paperino e i tre pi?)

17.Madam Mim And The Hollow Mountain US 19
=
S 66127 (Zio Paperone e la montagna cava)

22.The Double Amnesia Case MM 23
=
I AT 73-C (Topolino e la doppia amnesia)

28.The Scarlet Ray MM&GO 24
=
I AT 83-C (Topolino e il raggio scarlatto)

30.The Mask Of Bozambo DD 29
most likely is
I AT 118-B (Paperino e la trib? dei Trumbombo)

31.Flight Into Time DD 26
=
I AT 61-A (Paperino e la fuga nel tempo)

As for the others, a few scans might help... the first page should be
enough...

I also heard that half of the print run of the Gladstones was immediately
shipped to customers and shops abroad, which would further reduce the supply
of Gladstone back issues in the U.S.

Here in Germany we have two ongoing series of newsstand issues: "Micky Maus", which
is published weekly and mainly contains Scandinavian stories, and "Donald Duck Sonderheft",
which contained exclusively Barks in the past and for a few months now features a selection
of the creme de la creme of other Duck artists. You could say: Micky Maus is for readers,
Donald Duck Sonderheft for collectors. And while the print run of Micky Maus is dwindling away,
from 1.5 Million a few years ago to "only" 500.000 today, Donald Duck Sonderheft has recently
been switched to a monthly publication schedule while it was just bi-monthly in the past. And
the German edition of the Barks library is selling extremely well. So what we have here is
just the same development as in the U.S.: More collectors, fewer readers. And while I
like the collector's editions I also fear that there will be less and less children growing up
with Disney comics in the future.

Mickey Mouse in Color is far from "an incomplete effort". In fact this book is just about perfect!

Hello Sigvald:

I speak and I have read comics in Spanish (my native language). Although in my
country (Per?) never produced comics, I could buy comics of Mexico, Chile,
Argentina and Colombia. And from time to time some coming from Spain. Although
in Latin America there were several agreements with the names, many names
translated by Spain differed enough of those used in America.
GIL PATO or T?O GILITO? Of where that name came out? If there is some from
Spanish in the list, would request him, than did me the great favor of
explaining to me if "GIL" has some special connotation in Spain.
In America it is good known as RICO Mc PATO, disappearing the original name of
Scrooge (to think that their true name newly discovered it only seven years ago
when his adventures have read them more than for 30 years)

Regrettably at the present time only comics of second hand or "offers" coming
from United States arrive to my country. And they are sometimes expensive. For
that reason I have liked a lot to find this List and their interest for the
family of Ducks and of the generosity of their members in sharing information
and comics escaneados.

Wanting to contribute my grain of sand I am giving some translations to the
spanish (of Latin America):

JOS? CARIOCA is well written

PANCHITO PISTOLAS is the correct name, no "Pistoles"

I possess an ago 20 year-old old Mexican magazine where the printed history is
"The old castles
secret".
There are Scottie McTerrier is simply called Mc TON and Sir Quackly is called
SIR GRAZN?N (if you want I send you the escaneado from that page to your
personal e-mail).

Of the other names that are more recent I don't have reference.

Personally I am not in favor that the Own names are translated in other
languages. These should always be same, but maybe it would not be of the
popular
acceptance characteristic of each country.

Greetings

DAVID

Oh well - my mailreader (Outlook) seems to mess up mails when
I reply to another mail which was not in plain ASCII-text. I suppose
someone at Microsoft built in too much intelligence here ;-)

So here is my latest posting again, this time hopefully without
any attachment and with better linebreaks:

Mickey Mouse in Color is far from "an incomplete effort". In fact
this book is just about perfect! From all of my 7000+ comics and
2000+ books this one would be amongst the ten I would take with me to
and abandoned island. As it was not meant to be a complete edition
but a "Best of". This is what it is, and as that it couldn't be
any better. A true labor of love and I am dumbfound why to this day the
deluxe edition is still available at original price. True, it is quite
expensive. But then the production value makes it worth every dollar -
and it is signed by Barks & Gottfredson. So if there is anybody reading this
who is still undecisive about buying this book: Do it man - you won't
regret it! Or at least try to get the regular edition.
The Mickey Mouse comic issues were a great read, even though I would have
preferred to see the strips in their original format. For the issues
the panels were rearranged to fit a standard comic book page.

That is cruel, you know? Telling me of an abandoned Taliaferro edition.
But I fear it would not have sold enough. A similar project here in Germany
a few years ago was put on ice after three issues. Just a few days ago
I ordered a huge edition with Al Taliaferro sundays from Italy - even
though my only knowledge of the Italian language comes from 7 years of
Latin in school ;-)

I don't have the slightest doubt that it was perceived rightly that a Gottfredson
Library would have become a financial disaster. And as I understand it many of
the old strips (Mickey trying to commit suicide, racial stereotypes, ...)
were banned by Disney in later years and couldn't be reprinted anyway.

> Let's hope that one day that picture will change, and it will happen.

I put great faith in the future of digital media. I hope to see all the great
strips of the past in digital form to be read on an eBook display. With the
old Mickey Mouse strips I believe their copyright has expired so they are public
domain now and everybody could digitize them. But after the trouble Eternity
had with their "Uncensored Mouse" I won't be the one to try :-#

Hi, I already sent you a mail, but maybe you didn't receive it.

This is most probably W VP 2-02. This is listed in INDUCKS as a 19 page
story, but at least I can see from your scan that the artist, Murry, is the
same. So I guess it was only shortened for the Australian publication. As
far as I know this is the very first story including Scuttle, so if you can
see him in it, you have another proof.

Hi!

I have a question to the Paperolimpiadi story(ies) by Romano Scarpa (I TL 1705-
A):

In this story, Gyro recieves some kind of parody on a Nobel Prize. In the
Norwegian translation, the city where the prize is awarded is the famous
Scandinavian capital "Stockfisk" in... was it Norsvedia? I wonder what this was
in the original version - was this Sweden/Stockholm, or was it just
another "silly country/city name which doesn't really exist"?
