I tend to disagree here: I would *prefer* to have my comics in digital form
instead of the current printed versions, because
- they take no space
- comics would always remain in print
- all the great comics of the past would always be available
- I could buy any comic instantly over the internet
- it could be possible to try a comic before you purchase it.
- I could take my comics with me wherever I go
- they could be much cheaper as production costs are much lower
- they do not collect dust, yellow and deteriorate of the years
- I could find any comic in my collection instantly
- I could reread any comic at any time
- colors ould be better as digital displays can display millions of
colors and are more brilliant than print.
- I could make my own "best of" collections
There would of course be a few comics I would like to keep because
they are beautiful books or because I became sentimentally attached
to them over the years, but this would just be around 20-30 books.
The others I would trade in for digital versions at any time.
Of course this means that there has to be a common versatile brilliant
cost-efficient mobile display. But this will come in the next few years.
In fact there already are some, but they are yet too expensive or just
not good enough. The real problem lies in the materials copright and
publishers reluctance to hop onto the digital train. But eComics will come
and we will be there to see it.

I don't buy the Micky Maus but whenever I have a look into it the stories
seem to be pretty good. They have a lot of Don Rosa and good European artists.
They even have some pages of Taliaferro (probably to attract collectors). I don't
think it's the material. I believe there are just too many other things today (TV,
Computer Games, Pokemon et al.

Yes, I believe it's the PR Disney built up over the years which does no longer
work today. If 5 year olds watch "Dragon Ball Z" on TV, where ultra-powerful warriors
blow each others heads off (sic!) how can they read a Donald Duck comic afterwards?
And even if they would, they would not want to be caught by their friends with this
children's stuff.
Has the new version of Paperinik (Donald as a seperhero) produced in Italy a few years
ago ever been the subject of discussion on this list? They tried (pretty successul IMHO),
to transplant Donald into the video age. Was this a financial success? Is the series
continued? Does anybody on the list know more about this?

In Finland we have had almost complete run of Taliaferro dailies from 1938
to 1951 so far. Each year presented in one soft cover book.
Almost all: one week of war time strips were censored, from 2nd of Feb till
7th of Feb 1942 were cut off. I wonder what happened in these strips? Short
explanation on the book says that American publisher made the decision to
not to publish tehse strips any more. I guess this censoring was the reason
why American edition wasn't made at all.
Some of the first of these books have Norwegian (?) original title "Donald
Duck fra dag til dag".
These books are otherwise quite good, but strips are printed in pretty small
size.

Well, I guess there were just some Nazi monsters in it, speaking with a
strange German accent...
I have to add that I really fed up with this #%@??€ censoring - see
also Gottfredson! A comic fan has the right for completeness! As for
everybody else it is no problem for a German to see Nazis depicted as what
they are (except maybe for some incurable exceptions, but that's not only a
German problem, and they don't deserve any consideration anyway). In films
like "The Great Dictator" or "To be or not to be" the same stereotypes were
ridiculed, but nobody ever thought of censoring them. Guess what would
happen, if somebody had the
"brilliant" idea to forbid any further publication of "Asterix chez les
goths" due to racial stereotypes? He'd certainly be killed...
So why always Disney comics? (sigh)
Paperinik: In Germany, as far as I know, this series was cancelled due
to lack of success. Never mind, I prefer the old version
(Carpi, Cavazzano, and even Scarpa, I think). Back
then, it was a superhero PARODY, but I'm not so sure anymore
about the new version.

No. At one time, Donald tries to sell clothes to an
indian, but the indian in question doesn't like the
clothes Donald shows him and says he wants a "war
suit". Then, we see Donald making a deal and the
indian wearing suits for base-ball players thinking
it's for soldiers.
In the strips, the general impression is that Donald
doesn't care much about making a fair deal but wants
to make as much money as possible by whatever possible
mean, using the maladjustation or credulity of the
indians. He acts like a crook (although sometimes not
a very good crook).

No. At one time, Donald tries to sell clothes to an
indian, but the indian in question doesn't like the
clothes Donald shows him and says he wants a "war
suit". Then, we see Donald making a deal and the
indian wearing suits for base-ball players thinking
it's for soldiers.
In the strips, the general impression is that Donald
doesn't care much about making a fair deal but wants
to make as much money as possible by whatever possible
mean, using the maladjustation or credulity of the
indians. He acts like a crook (although sometimes not
a very good crook).
