Today several messages from Sigvald have been posted here on DCML. I find
such messages interesting, but also a bit annoying since they seem to be
lacking important properties such as politeness and positivity. And they are
for instance assuming that Von Drake's marriage with Scrooge's sister
Matilda McDuck is an "important fact".

This is not funny Harry, and I?ll tell you why:

a) When there was a question about Swedish and Danish comics
I reacted the *exact* same way as I presume you and other Dutch
comic lovers would have reacted if anyone asked DCML about
Belgian and Luxembourgian Disney comics without giving any
explanation what so ever, why neglecting Dutch comics even
though they are coming for the BeNeLux as well. Anyway, all I
did was asking our Finnish friend a simple question ? and he
did answer it both quickly and polite.

b) The reason my last mail about the LvD-sites was sent twice
is that not all my mails sent from this mail account to DCML
lately have reached the list. Maybe Per (Starback) or
Thomas (Lauritsen) can find the reason for that. Normally a
posting will reach DCML in e few minutes. Last night it
appeared to take longer time so I assumed that I could have
don something wrong with the address and thus posted it again.

A marriage IS definitely a very important fact in anyone?s life.

Anyway I think that there are better ways of improving good communication on this group than to indicate that some of my
postings are "lacking important properties such as politeness
and positivity". For instance you could - as an expert on the
subject - have responded to the very interesting tread about
the size of Duckburg,s population.

When/where/why did that (unimportant) fact happen?

Hi all!

Yesterday links to several WEB-pages dedicated to Ludwig von Drake were
posted here on DCML. I find these pages interesting, but also a bit annoying
since they seem to be lacking important facts about the character, such as
the fact that he forgot his umbrella in a book store in a Sunday strip from
1967.

AH! AH! AH! AH! AH!

Since months I don't laugh so much witn an DCML message!
It was great Stefan! :-)

I think the marriage fact wasn't pointed 'cause it's just know a lot here in
DCML (Since it came from a Don Rosa's idea), and it's just published in one
"official" Disney publication, that Donald Duck book I don't remember the
name...Am I right?

I've put my roughs from my unpublished Ludwig online:
www.inducks.hpg.com.br

Yes, it's in portuguese...and the "inducks" it's 'cause I pretend to do an
brazilian site dedicated to Inducks in the future! (It's an good idea to
popularize Inducks around the Disney brazilian creators, I assume...)

Hum...so I have an Ludwig site too! ;-))

Slightly off topic but just a little. For those of you that are
interested Disney have released a DVD series that's called Walt Disney
Treasures, look at http://www.dvdtoons.com/ Among them are a complete
collection of all the black and white Mickey Mouse cartoons.

But it is for region 1 only. Does anyone know if I can watch this with a
region free DVD player and a PAL TV in Sweden ? The DVD player is in a
PC and has been reprogrammed to be region free. It used to be a region 2
DVD player.

Have a look at the last DCML digest:

Three enthousiastic, positive messages about a new LVD website.

> 12. Missing facts in Ludwig von Drake sites (sigvald at duckburg.dk)
> 13. Missing facts in Ludwig von Drake sites (sigvald at duckburg.dk)

Two negative messages about that same website.

This confirms my idea that you always want to write negative things. Even if
you have to find something very minor to complain about.

> a) When there was a question about Swedish and Danish comics

I was not referring to this subject in any way. With "several messages" I
only meant #12 and #13 (see above).
I don't even recall what your other message was about.

> b) The reason my last mail about the LvD-sites was sent twice

If an e-mail does *not* reach the list, you get a bounce message. If you
think something is wrong, warn the list administrator (Per), using the admin
address.
In any case, it's of no use to send (nearly) the same message twice.
(BTW, in my previous mail I was not complaining about this. I only used the
term "several messages" because it resembled your own text.)

Yes. But Von Drake is not married. So it is not a *fact*. So you can't blame
a website maker for not mentioning it.

That was an attempt to get a message to you in a polite and positive way.
Without using words like "plonk" or "kill file", for instance.

I can decide myself which threads to take part in.
And I don't need to write a message when I have nothing new to add.

Hi all Swedes, I'm Swede to but I'm writing this in English for the
benefit of the list.

I'm a read die-hard collector for complete copies of the comics. And in
quite a few of the older Kalle Anka & C:o comics there were additional
inserts. They were e.g. paper dolls, paper toys, subscription coupons or
simply advertisements for merchandise of various kinds.

I have tracked down almost all of these now but there are a few numbers
that I don't know what the insert in that number was. So I'm hoping that
maybe you can help me find out. I know that there should be an insert
because in the comic it is printed "bilaga medf?ljer" "insert enclosed".

The numbers that I need help with are
Kalle Anka & C:o
1971 # 21
1975 # 36 37
1976 # 22
1977 # 28 37 43

What complicates things are that not all copies of a certain number had
these inserts. Some of them were only for subscribers e.g. And all these
numbers (plus some) I bought as back issues from the publisher but they
did not have the inserts all the same. I was beginning to think that
maybe it was a mistake that caused "bilaga medf?ljer" to be printed but
then I found out what the insert in 1978 # 7 was from a guy that had it.
He didn't want to sell it though. It is a coupon for records from Walt
Disneys Sagoteater (Fairytale theater).

Apart from those inserts mentioned above I'm seeking the following
1964 # 24 lott till cykellotteriet (bike lottery)
1971 # 50 prenumerationskupong ( subscriber coupon)
1972 # 8 Kalle Ankas m?larbok (DD:s paintingbook)
47 prenumerationskupong ( subscriber coupon)
1978 # 7 Walt Disneys Sagoteater skivor kupong, the one mentioned above

If anyone has any info on these or would be willing to sell or trade
with me I would be most grateful.

There are two things to think of when watching DVD movies:

- format (PAL, NTSC, SECAM etc.), this should not cause any problems if
watching the movies on a computer, and
- region (free (anywhere), 1 (North America), 2 (Western Europe, Middle East
& Japan), 3 (South Korea, Republic of China and parts of south-east Asia), 4
(Australia and South America), 5 (Russia, North Korea, India and parts of
Asia), 6 (People's Republic of China), 7 (nowhere), 8 (airplanes (?) and
similar)), this usually doesn't cause any problems if the DVD player is set
to support any region.

So you would probably be able to watch the Walt Disney Treasures movies
without any problem.

There are two issues when one wants to watch American movies on a
European system, and vice versa.

One is the regional codes, as you mentioned. A "normal" DVD-player can
be modified to be able to show all regional codes (and no, this is *not*
illegal, even though some dealers or manufacturers tell you so). Since
your PC dvd-player, Ola, has been reprogrammed, there should be no
problems here.

Another issue is the two different TV signal systems. USA uses a system
called NTSC, while Europe uses PAL. Normally a PAL TV cannot show an
NTSC signal, but many new models can, however. If your TV can only show
PAL, you may have a switch or a setting in your stand-alone DVD player
to select output as NTSC or PAL. If not, you can buy a device that
transforms the NTSC signal to PAL to put between your DVD player and
your TV. I guess (but am not sure) that some PC DVD players can select
whether to output NTSC or PAL.

For more info, check: http://www.thedigitalbits.com/officialfaq.html#1.19

(the next issue on that page may also interest people going for cartoons
and other animation on DVDs)

Well, that's *not* true. It was for instance ME who started
the topic which eventualy gave us information about the exact
publication of "Dream of a Lifetime".

>>> And they are for instance assuming that Von Drake's marriage
>>> with Scrooge's sister Matilda McDuck is an "important fact".

In the Rosa universe he IS married... (That's also confirmed by
Fernando in another thread). And it is even logic. Even the
referred sites states that Ludwig is Donald's uncle. There is 4
ways that can be true (assuming uncle means uncle):
a) Ludwig could be Donald's father's brother
b) Ludwig could be Donald's mother's brother
c) Ludwig could be married to a sister of Donalds's father
d) Ludwig could be married to a sister of Donalds's mother

Since his name is "von Drake" and not Duck or McDuck
alternatives A and B are very little plausible. So
what's left is alternatives C and D.

Since Donald's father's only sister, Daphne Duck, is
married to Goostave Gander (Gladstone Gander's parents)
possibillity C is impossible. What's then left is
possibillity D.

You may argue that Ludwig never apears together with
Matilda. But that doesn't prove that they never did marry.
She may have died after a few years leaving him a widower.
Just like Grandma Duck is a widdow after Humerdink Duck.

I didn't mean to *blame* anyone. Just making a little point
out of that thread. I am very sorry if anyone in DCML in any
way felt offended by that.

Noting new to add?
Hmmm actually the topic started with a question if
Duckburg has 10.000 or more than 100.000 inhabitants.
As long as you haven't commented that no one can
possibly know what number you prefer.

Okay. Not *always*. As your mail shows, there *can* be interesting
discussions emerging from your mails.
Sometimes. 8-)

Only in his mind. Not in any of his stories!

I didn't realise that LVD was called "uncle" in the beginning. So it *is*
indeed possible that:
> d) Ludwig could be married to a sister of Donald's mother

Right. And he never appears to be married either! 8-)

me> So you can't blame a website maker for not mentioning it.

I was triggered by the word "annoying". To me that's a strong word, even
with "a bit" in front of it.
Never mind.

OK, here's my "very interesting" contribution to that thread:
"I never thought about it before. I think what Rob wrote makes a lot of
sense. In any case, Duckburg definitely has more than 100,000 inhabitants.
Duckburg *must* be larger than Zoetermeer or Almere."
