Gee, but it's been ages since I've posted here, but now I've finally got
something to say.
I'm *really* excited about the prospect of comics here again, and yes, I
plan on subscribing to both titles as soon as official word comes out.
I'm sitting on my hands though, trying hard not to get my hopes up
though. After all, how many countless times have we been told that there
was a deal "right around the corner"? Not trying to be a stick in the
mud, just being realistic.

Grandma/Ludwig/House of Mouse

For Fernando: The information about House of Mouse and link to its site was
provided by Rich Bellacera several messages back. the link he provided can be
found at <members3.boardhost./com/DisneyComics/>. That is exactly what I hand
copied to paper. I may have made an error, as it doesn't look correct. If that
doesn't work, try <members3.boardhost.com/DisneyComics/> . Then, press on
his link which reads: "House of Mouse". That will bring you to the House of
Mouse website. There you will find a list of episodes. If you click on each
episode, you will then see the credits for each (producers, directors, writers,
artissts, etc.)
For Lars: One cannot assume ANY Disney Artist, writer or producer is the
ultimate authority on the relationships of the Disney Universe, as there are
too many contradictions. I prefer to go with Walt Disney first, Barks second,
and Rosa third (only because he put so much work into it - and NOT if his
assumptions contradict (literally, or logically) with Barks, the bulk of other
creators or what seems LOGICAL to ME.
For example. It does NOT seem possible or logical to me that Ludwig is
a "true" or close uncle of Donald. This is (1) because of his advanced age; and
(2) because he was virtually unknown to and by his relatives in Duckburg, upon
his arrival. I feel that he could be Donald's Great Uncle (which English
speaking people would refer to as "Uncle", almost never referring to that
difference. He is old enough to be in Scrooge's and Grandma's generation. In my
opinion, Donald is too young to be the son of his younger sister, or the
brother of Ludwig's son-in-law. If either were true, Ludwig would not have
been unknown to Donald and most of the other Duckburg Ducks. I am, myself an
immigrant. My parents were both immigrants. We still have very strong ties to
family in our previous countries. This normally lasts AT LEAST ONE GENERATION,
but often TWO! I just cannot believe a family member of such a close
relationship would be unknown or only "heard of" by the first generation born
in the new country. If Donald's parents were born in USA, and their parents
were the immigrants from Austria, that makes it only more likely that Ludwig is
a more distant relation than first uncle. If he is an uncle, he is a great
uncle! my original idea was that he was a distant cousin, which explains the
lack of familiarity between him and his American relatives. Even so, younger
people in the family might well refer to him as "uncle", as a term of respect
for his age (as is done within both the Dutch and Lithuanian sides of my
family, and most other families I know). That could be the same reasoning the
Italians used.
The reality is, that most often, Disney story writers do NOT research
exaustively, what the (supposed) "Official" line is on relationships of
secondary characters. We are destined to ALWAYS have some contradictions.
For Lars and other sceptics and Frank: Regarding Barks Grandma in "Best
Christmas". I must reiterate my previously stated view. I believe Carl barks
did NOT mean to portray a DIFFERENT grandmother for Donald (or the nephews).
AHA!!! Here we have something MORE likely (although I don't really agree with
this either)! The argument that THIS Grandma doesn't have her hair in a bun
(beehive style), and she is TOO SPRY and YOUTHFUL to be Elviry, brings up this
possibility: Elviry is Donald's Grandmother, who raised him (a la "This is
Your Life, Donald Duck"). While THIS younger Grandma is the NEPHEWS'
grandmother ((i.e. Della/(Dumbella)'s HUSBAND'S MOTHER!!! However, my
conversations with Barks regarding his methods, logic and thinking,as well as
my knowledge of Western's policies, lead me back to the conclusion that neither
Barks, nor ANY other Disney or Western artist or writer (during the 1940s and
1950s, ever intended to portray more than one Grandmother. Barks told me time
and again, that he only invented characters because he NEEDED them for his
current story. He CERTAINLY did NOT need a second grandmother for that story.
All other things being equal, it was the policy of the studio to keep the
number of MAJOR and REGULAR characters small- so as to avoid confusion, and
keep simple, easy to follow story lines. I HATE that policy, but have been
told by my own editors (Disney and Non-Disney) to limit the number of different
secondary AND regular characters. The SIMPSONS shows that the opposite of such
a policy can lead to great success. Nonetheless, it WAS the policy of the
time. Also, Carl told me that he read Taliaferro's strip quite regularly in the
1940s; not only because he LIKED it for amusement, but because he needed to do
so for his work. He wanted to make sure that HIS Donald and Nephews stayed "on
model" with those of the Animated cartoons AND the Newspaper strip. That meant
that HIS Characters not only should LOOK like those in the Cartoons and
newspaper, but also act similarly. He couldn't be sure of watching all the
cartoons, but he did receive a newspaper every Sunday. Taliaferro, working
inside the Studio, was regularly given the animation model sheets. As Barks
followed the weekly and daily strips fairly carefully, I'm SURE that he saw
Taliaferro's Grandma before drawing Grandma in Best Christmas. However, he MAY
NOT have remembered so well what she looked like. He was commissioned by
Western to do the Firestone Christmas story, probably with little time leeway.
He lived in distant San Jacinto, and would have needed lots of lead time to ask
someone at Western's Los Angeles Office to first ask Disney Studios to send a
model sheet of her to his house. As he needed her only for 2 panels in the
story, and probably did not want to "bother" people at Western nor Taliaferro
(who probably would have had to draw up the sheet new). He probably thought
his memory of what she looked like, and making sure she looked "grandmotherly"
and like a Duck, would be sufficiant. In ALL these 38 years that I've had the
story, I NEVER even imagined that she wasn't the same Grandma. If someone has
very long hair are they CONDEMNED by natural law to wear it pinned up EVERY
MINUTE OF THEIR LIVES???
Regardless of Don's extensive and well thought out work, I believe the
following:
Ludwig von Drake is a distant cousin of Donald, who is called "Uncle" by all
the younger Duckburg Ducks out of respect. He could, possibly be Donald's Great
Uncle, by marriage.
Grandma Duck is Donald's grandmother, and The Nephews' great grandmother. She
WAS married. Her husband has now died. He WAS alive at least to the time of
Donald's youth. I will not dispute Bill Wright's use of the name Humperdink.

I can confirm those Duck/Gyro relatives from the B-coded stories.
But please keep in mind that all of those Brazilian
relatives were created *without* any intention of matching official
family tree(s) and/or to preserve any continuity; they were
created just to fill the needs of a specific story plot -- this
is simply the way Brazilian stories are/were usually made!
> in B 890020 , we meet Gyro's great grandpa
In this story, Daisy time-travels to the year 1889 to
interview Gyro's great-grandfather Neco Pardal, since Gyro claimed
that he invented the automobile at the same time as
Carl Benz (Daisy also needs to find out who was the unknown founder of
Duckburg's Women Association in the same year). But Daisy discovers that,
while Benz invented the vehicle with internal-combustion engine,
Gyro's great-grandfather had actually invented a car with an
"external-combustion" engine, which was a complete failure since
there's no brake capable of stopping a car driven by such engine.

(hey, it's me!)
> S 71333 , a look-alike beggar cousin of scrooge
The first story where this beggar cousin of Scrooge appeared
may be (as far as I know) S 70121 "Too Many Mcducks"
(drawn by Tony Strobl) where he is kidnapped by the Beagle Boys
who think he's Scrooge.
He appears in at least five S-coded stories (some of them are
Brazilian art-only stories) and in (at least again) three
B-coded ones.
He looks exactly like Scrooge, but is a beggar who never mind about
money. In his probable lastest appearance (S 82120 "The Real Scrooge"
- art by Jaime Diaz Studio), although, he behaves like a villain,
kidnapping Scrooge to take his place... That is all I know about him.
> in B 930046b, gloria's mother
Gloria's mother Pascoalina ("Mamma Pascoalina" -- apparently
of Italian descent) appears only in this story, where Gloria
takes her boyfriend Fethry to meet her, who runs a pizzeria.
Of course she doesn't like Fethry at the very first glance,
and tries to make Gloria marry with one of her costumers,
owner of a cheese factory. But he chokes with a pizza
made by Fethry and Mamma Pascoalina has to carry him to
the hospital, leaving the pizzeria in Fethry's "qualified"
hands. Drawn by Luiz Podavin.
> in B 910212 , grandma's cousin
Called Teobaldo, he is a middle-aged duck who pretended to
be dead just to get rid of his debt collectors, living then
hidden in his own little country house (near Grandma's farm)
and scaring people acting as a headless ghost...
Drawn by Verci de Mello.
> in B 910264 , daisy's great aunt
As I said, Brazilian writers didn't mind about family trees... so in
this story we have *three* "non-official" Duck ancestors:
- Daisy Duck's great-aunt Clementina
- Scrooge's great-uncle Pat La Tinhas
- Rockerduck's grandfather Pat Von Concius
Daisy finds manuscripts of her great-aunt inside an old piano, thanks
to Donald who broke it trying to move it. Those manuscripts
(hidden in sheet music) tells when the Scrooge's great-uncle had
to run away from the men of Rockerduck's grandfather and then left
with Daisy's great-aunt a golden ladle made with all gold he prospected.
He never returned to her, and Daisy then finds the ladle in her
own basement disguised with a coat of paint. But she also finds
out that the ladle belongs to uncle Scrooge, who takes it.
In the end, Daisy promises in her diary to search another "family secrets".
Apparently the writer intended to make more stories with this character,
but it never occurred.
Drawn by Atila de Carvalho.
> in B 830141, scrooge's great uncle captain patatinhas (by name only, i
> presume)
Only cited by Scrooge in this story, Captain Patatinhas was a great
explorer and sea captain whose sailing ship got stuck somewhere
in the North Pole's ice in the beginning of the 20th century (exact
date unknown). Patatinhas and his crew survived but never proved
they had reached the Pole. Now Scrooge is his only heir but to get
the inheritance he has to find the old ship and bring back to the
lawers some object from it in order to prove they have found the
ship in the North Pole.
No more info about him (since it was not important for the plot)
Drawn by Irineu Soares Rodrigues and written by Arthur Faria Jr.
(me again!)
You can find scans of those characters at:
http://www.projesom.com.br/afaria/ancestors/
Hope it helps!

He's called Nadinhas or Galt?rio here in Brazil, right?
I've put an scan of him here:
http://www.inducks.hpg.com.br//Imagens/Nadinhas.jpg
It's from 1973's B 73095-"Os Urubuservadores", on that one he's called
Galt?rio.
You also can see an early version of Pedr?o and Ellsworth appears too.

Scrooge's dubbelganger/Gyro's Great Grandfather

For Fernando and Arthur:
So! Gyro's great grandfather (Neco Pardal) was alive during Gyro's adulthood?
He looks just like Gyro, with a white beard. He must be the father of Barks'
Ratchet Gearloose (grandfather of Gyro). Does Ratchet yet live-or did the old
man outlive him. Ratchet was a contemporary of the YOUNG Scrooge. That means
neco is old enough to be Scrooge's father!!!
Regarding the lookalike cousin of Scrooge, who is a beggar: I seem to recall
something similar in the early 1960s (or very late 1950s), drawn by Jack
Bradbury. It was a story with a bum (beggar) that looked just like Scrooge. I
don't think he was related to Scrooge. I believe it was an S-coded story.
Perhaps you remember that one, Harry?
You've all been TOO INTERESTING lately! I'd better stop commenting and get to
my work that brings in money!!!

This reminds me of Star Trek Voyager's captain Janeway, who, during the
show's first seasons had her hair in a "Grandma Duck" bun, but later wore
her hair in a looser, more becoming (though, arguably, less practical
from a military point of view) style. I would assume that nobody suggested
that they changed captain in the middle of the show!

Scrooge's beggar look-alike cousin
Message 403 -

I've made a list of all the stories I know in which appear a beggar cousin of
Scrooge, according to the stories I know, the commentaries on Inducks, and
the help of S?ren Haagerup :
S 70121
B 73095
S71333
S 72293
S 75080
S 82120
He is still a beggar and a look-alike cousin, but he never carries the same
name (in Denmark: McKluns, tim Tiger, Scamplet Von And, ...), and he doesn't
always have the same personnality. do you think I should list them as one
character, or as many characters? i think Inducks should consider him as a
character as important as super ellsworth for instance. If Inducks had done
so, i'd probably have consider the character as being one and only one
character... But I didn't do so, above all because he didn't have always the
same last name...
please, tell me what you think about this...

Scrooge's Cousin"s"!

Gilles,
I consider the Scrooge's cousins to be the same character...!
But I really preffer the "I don't care for money" than the bad one that
want's to take advantage from Scrooge's money, since he's an poor beggar.
He's an strange character, but very interisting. Scrooge looks so much
ashamedness for having an poor presence in the family, since he is the most
rich duck in the world. It develop's Scrooge's personality, at least I think
so...
The "bad" cousin looks so much like that type of parents who only visit
their family when need favors or money! :-\
For Neco Pardal, I will leave the answer to the writer of the story....
;-)))
