Why would a married man live at Donald's place (unless he's married with
Donald), which he often does in Karp/Talliaferro/Grant strips?

Why is he, in that case, refered to as "morbror" (meaning "mother's
brother") in Swedish?

About Ludwig's relation with Donald Duck, he could also be called Uncle
because he's familiar with the Duck Family. (at least in France, it's not
rare to see a child call a friend of his parents "uncle")
He could also be a distant cousin, and I think it has already been mentionned
somewhere...
But as there are no authors who did tell something really concrete about
Ludwig's relation with Donald, I'll base myself upon *unpublished material*,
and tell he's matilda's husband. When Don Rosa built the Duck Family tree, he
based himself upon Barks's versions of his family trees, and decided to keep
Matilda in his tree while she was no use (she didn't need to be there because
in his version, she wasn't Gladstone Gander's biological mother, as Daphne
actually is), so one of the reason why he kept her was probably to act as
Ludwig's wife.
Waitaminit... There IS an official version of their relation : the tree
published in The Little Big Book of Disney
(http://goofy313g.free.fr/calisota_online/trees/lbbdtree.html): and in it,
maybe because it's probably inspired from messages posted in the list and
related websites, Ludwig is Matilda's husband!!! So I'm afraid Sigvald was
right :-) (*this time*!!!)
But anyway, the webmaster of the new site seems to only care about the
cartoons universe, so why would he consider facts from comoc books
universe?...
I asked the webmaster why he didn't use matilda, but he seems to have
forgotten to answer this very question... Maybe he'll add her later...

Well, I think Ludwig would be so sad if he saw the quarells he provoked here
:-) If he knew this he wouldn't have forgotten his umbrella!!! But I guess a
Duck doesn't care about this kind of things...

1) A marriage is *NOT* unimportant!
2) Don Rosa came up with this explanation when he did his Family Tree around 1992/1993.

a) As I have said earlier, there is a possibility that
he is a childless widdower.

b) As far as I know none of Barks, Rosa, Van Horn or Rota
have ever shown Ludwig living at Donald's place.

Obvious a translater's error which is common in Sweden.
Well known examples is that in Swedish comics Kalle Anka
(Donald) keeps saying: "Farbror Joakim" even though Scrooge
is his mother's brother, and that HD&L keeps saying "Farbror"
Kalle to Donald even though Donald is their mother's brother...

Regarding inserts in Disney comics as I described in my previous mail.

Has there been any inserts in the Disney comics in other countries as
well ? I'm thinking of 1980 and earlier because later on it became very
common. Nowadays every issue of Swedish Kalle Anka has som kind of
insert. Always a plastic toy together with the comic in a plastic bag.
Sometimes there could be something else like for instance in the next
issue there will be a X-mas calender on CD-ROM. And quite often
advertisements for this and that.

I have never seen any inserts in the about a hundred US disney comics
that I have from 1980 and earlier or seen it mentioned on a cover scan.
So I'm curious about your countries, how has it been on the inserts
front ?

Hello chums,

It concerns me that you have not considered all the
options in your discussions of Ludwig Von Drake. Have
you paused to consider possibilities (e) and (f):

e) sometimes, friends of the family or people from
across the street can become known affectionately as
"Uncle", though there is no genuine familial tie;

and

f) many children's entertainers, such as magicians,
Punch And Judy men, and those that bend long balloons
into giraffe shapes, often endow themselves with the
title "Uncle", e.g. "Uncle Cedric, Children's Parties
A Speciality. Magic, Comedy, Music, Slide Shows On
Request."

Thus it is quite clear that Von Drake, as well as
being a genius of Mathmagic land, could have been a
bloke from down the road, or doing a novelty act on
the side to make a few extra bucks.

I might go further to suggest option (g)...that
whoever created Von Drake was a careless hack who
didn't care in the slightest whether Von Drake was an
uncle, an aunt, or the King Of England, as long as he
could get his story in on time, but...this way madness
lies.
