Simple: Harry has been busy answering and sending other mails, so he hasn't
had the time to write any comments on this matter. ;-)

The uncle from Austria

You claim the only logical conclusion is that Ludwig is married to
Donald's mother's sister, since only that fits with various unpublished
Barks facts. But it's only the "logical" answer, because you want to
combine two Duck universes: The Barks one and the 1960s Disney
television one.
Walt Disney introduced Ludwig as Donald's uncle from Austria. Since this
was Walt himself talking about a character he had (in some capacity or
other) supervised the development of, I'm inclined to believe him on
these facts. I'm also pretty sure Walt didn't at the time intend Ludwig
to be married to Donald's mother's sister - if only because the animated
Duck universe had yet to introduce Donald's mother, let alone her
sister. And they still haven't!
Maybe Walt figured Ludwig was Donald's mother's brother? Maybe Walt
figured Ludwig was Donald's father's brother, and Donald's father had
anglicised his last name to "Duck" when he came to the US? Or maybe Walt
just didn't care, as long as Ludwig was an interesting addition to the
animated Duck universe? I think it's pretty safe to say he didn't work
out a Duck family tree, incorporating all of Barks' characters, before
deciding how Ludwig should be related to the rest of them.
No, I personally don't see any reason why Ludwig *couldn't* be married
to Donald's mother's sister. I've certainly never seen him being
romantically linked with anybody else. I'm just pointing out a mistake
in your reasoning: Trying to combine separately developed universes and
claim the "logical" answer is the only correct one.

I haven't replied to your earlier post either, and it pertains moreso to
me, as a person living in the USA, than perhaps to Harry who already has
access to Disney comics in his own language. However, not speaking for
Harry or anyone else, the primary reason I've been silently (but happily)
bouncing off the ceiling, is because I am also refraining with caution
waiting to learn more about what exactly is going to be published. If as
the article suggests, we will be getting NEW material, albeit reprinted
from the overseas marketplace, such as that being published by Egmont, than
I am elated. But if it is merely just more reprints of Barks and
Gottfredson; stuff that has seen re-re-re-re-repint over and over again
here (in a plethora of formats), than I'm really not interested in a
revival of Disney comics in the USA. I want NEW material, or at least
material that has never seen print in the USA before! Of course, I could
dream that Gemstone would reprint some of the long neglected (censored?)
material from the early Taliaferro/Barks/Gottfredson era, too. I'd love to
see the old Carioca and Panchito American strips reprinted in English
someday, but I'd also love to see the Italian Scarpa and others imported to
the States as well as the non-English Rosa comics finally printed in the
USA.
Just my thoughts on the subject.

Gilles,
On your Pete Family Tree page, there is a character which you have depicted
sitting between Plottigat and Bad Pete. She is a large fat canary who has
teamed up with Pete in at least two stories which I have from Brazilian
comics. In Portaguese her name seems to be Chica Naria, and in one story
she is colored white, and in the other she is pink, like in your scan.
I brought her up to some list members about two or three years ago, but not
many are familiar with her or her origins. It was suggested that, like
Melody (Minnie's niece) and Fethry (Donald's cousin) she was a Studio
creation, but that's about it. From the stories, she obviously fulfills
the same role that Trudy plays... as Pete's girlfriend and
partner-in-crime. Based on her girth and attitude, I think she and Trudy
could easily go a few rounds in the WWF!

He was created by Walt Disney and the people at the Disney television
animation unit. Not exactly hacks - the way *I* define the word, anyway.

I don't really like stating that anybody is "wrong", when the Disney
universe is as fluid as it is.
That having been said, I've never seen Ludwig have any other
relationship to Donald than as his uncle. And being Donald's uncle *was*
Walt Disney's intention for Ludwig. So yeah, the "cousin Ludwig" thing
probably *was* a mistake.

Since my name was invoked, I'd better comment on this.
You're right, of course, Sigvald. In my opinion, Carl Barks is the
authority to trust on whether Scrooge is related to Grandma. Note,
however, that Barks is *not* the authority on whether *Grandma* is
related to *Scrooge*!! That would be Al Taliaferro, and since he (as far
as I know) never said anything about that subject, it's still impossible
to make a definitive statement like "Grandma is Scrooge's sister's
mother in-law".
Barks *is* the authority on how Gladstone and Scrooge are related to
each other, though. Or Magica and Gyro. Or Little Helper and the Beagle
Boys.
Call it "Jensen's Theory of Relativity". Or don't.

There are actually two Grandma Duck's old boyfriends created by
Brazilian artists, with similar first names but different looks:
(*** SPOILERS AHEAD!***)
- Patusco Patusquela, an old duck wearing a long white beard and a cane.
He appeared only in the story B 810330, "Um amor do passado" (A love from
the past), drawn by Verci de Mello and published in Pato Donald 1732 and
Disney Especial 145.
In this story, his identical twin brother named Chatusco (who was unknown
to Grandma Duck) re-appears 50 years later and tricks her saying he is
her old boyfriend from the past just to try to marry her. HD&L suspect
something is wrong and later uncover his plot calling the real Patusco
(who happens to be already married with 20 children!)
- Patrusco Pato, an old duck with grey hair (Ludwig Van Drake style)
and wearing a green checked jacket and black bow tie.
He appeared in two stories, both drawn by Euclides Miyaura:
a) B 820015 "Um amor do passado no presente" (A love from the
past in the present), published in Pateta 14 and
Disney Especial 107.
Patrusco, who is rich and lives in a mansion "in the South",
re-appears and asks Grandma Duck to marry him (and therefore
she no longer needs to work hard in her farm). In the end
(with a little "help" of the Beagle Boys who appear to rob
the farm), she proves him it's impossible for her to leave
her simple farmer life and then he leaves (promising to
return).
b) B 820071 "Ti-ti-ti na fam?lia Patrusco Pato" (Troubles at
Patrusco Pato Family) published in Tio Patinhas 246 and
Disney Especial 137.
Patrusco invites Grandma to visit his mansion and family, in
another attempt to make a proposal. But the problem here
(besides Grandma Duck who still doesn't want to leave her
simple farmer life) is Patrusco's spoiled sister Pamela who
doesn't like Grandma because she isn't rich. But in the end
Grandma finds out that Pamela loves their simple foreman and
helps them to get together and refuses again Patrusco's proposal
after proving that living in a rich mansion isn't for her.
-- Arthur.
(not making a strike even if I wanted to: there's no
Disney production in Brazil any more)

Great Uncle Asa Duck

This is a question directed primarily, I think, at Giles.
Have you ever considered including Asa Duck in your Duck Family tree? He appears in an old Gold Key Donald Duck comic as Grandma Duck's Great Great Great Uncle and was claimed to be one of the 1st citizens of old Duckburg. I am not familiar with the INDUCKS referencing system but the issue is no. 185 (July 1977) and the story code is given as 90037-707. D.D. #185-775.
I would love to know who the illustrator is. He seems to have done a huge amount of illustrating for Western although his style is not my favourite.

So Scrooge might be related to Grandma while, at the same time, Grandma
might not be related to Scrooge. *Very* confusing IMHO...
In mathematics the order would, in such cases, not matter. So e.g.
x = 0 <=> 0 = x
It's indeed strange that this doesn't work with ducks...

Rob, can you send the link to the House of Mouse's website were you read
about Daan Jippes?
The show has it's comic book moments, as "House of Scrooge" and the first
animated Super Goofy. (I'd loved to see Fethry animated, but I think itl'll
not happen...my friends think I have an perfect voice to do him! Maybe I
talk a little crazynees... ;-))
Someone around here watched Romano Scarpa's Camminata Disney?
It's finished in fact?
Fernando!

The other Grandma - still!
Message 388 -
2002-11-20 at 01:00:24
Hi,
Thanks for the replies re "The other Grandma". So Rob seems to be pretty
sure it's Elvira. I myself, however, am still not quite convinced. It's not
only her look, it's especially her behaviour that leaves me sceptical. Did
Elvira ever jump around like a teenager in the Taliaferro strips?
Fact is: Taliaferro used the character only 24 times (if I have counted
correctly) in his daily and Sunday strips respectively, between September
1943 and March '44. After that he neglected Grandma for a shocking four and
a half years. So three possible explanations for the strikingly different
Grandma in Barks' "Best Christmas" come to my mind:
1. Barks read the Taliaferro strips regularly, but not all of them, and
maybe missed the existance of Elvira altogether. As I said, she
hadn't been used very often at the time (1945).
2. Barks knew of her existance, but didn't consider her an important
character, because she only had appeared 24 times in the strips, and
had disappeared completely for one and a half year, when he drew
"Best Christmas" in August 1945. She also wasn't a character in the
cartoons, which may have added to her "unimportance". So Barks
thought to himself: "So what, I'll create my own Grandma."
3. Barks had read the strips featuring Grandma, but showed an
extraordinary bad memory for both her looks and two of her most
important character traits: discipline and dignity.
1. and 2. seem to be more plausible to me, that's why I herewith claim:
The Grandma we see in "Best Christmas" is another one! Hopefully, one or two
of you will agree, especially after Gilles was so kind to put a scan
online... ;-)

Maybe Bark's early Grandma losted her hair, 'cause she's a so much eletrical
person!
So, if my theory is right, she's the same Grandma we know! But after having
lot's of problems with this, she decided to be an disciplinated and dignity
grandma, as pointed by Frank Bubacz! ;-))
Gilles, thanks to the scan! I'll try to find I have the comics you need
scans from!

Well, if she IS Elvira at all, maybe it's not a hair problem, but the fact
that she has just taken a shower and what she wears on her head is in fact
her shower cap (where you normally hide all of your hair underneath).... ;-)
