There are hundreds of DCML members. If they all would send a message about
how happy they are about the matter, this list would become very boring to
read. I already have problems catching up with the current amount of
messages. (The messages that I *did* send may show that.)

Besides, I don't think my happiness is more important than other people's
happiness. All I could have written was "yahooo" or something like that.
This adds no information (except maybe for the few people who are interested
in me personally). So I don't send that kind of messages.

This is the first time I am attacked for.. er.. I mean "friendly asked
about" *not* writing a message. Sigvald, you cross every border! 8-)

In "Spookhotel"(H 95043), crooge inherits an hotel from his great great uncle
in law Ignace de l'ortolan, and then Edgar de l'ortolan, Ignace's real
nephew, (Ignace didn't like him so he didn't inherit the hotel), tries to
scare them with holograms (we recognise Hazel, Smorgie, and other fantoms and
demons and monsters from "trick or treat")...
I'd want to know if somebody had the original version or another version of
the story, because the relation between scrooge and the de l'Ortolan's is
kind of weird, because while Edgar looks like he would be on Donald's or
Scrooge's line, he is in fact on Dirty Dingus' line... I know Potcrack
McDuck could have had a girl when he was very old, and this girl could have
married a very young Edgar de l'ortolan, whose brother, who was born many
years after him, has had Edgar when he was very old, or adopted him, but
well, it's still weird...

Your Brazilian Inducks index lists:

288 stories in 1997
18 stories in 1998
100 stories in 1999
185 stories in 2000
NO stories in 2001

I only looked at the highest B-code number for each year.

I heard you talking about a stop before, presumably in 1998. Can I conclude
that they started again in 1999, and stopped for the second time in 2001? Do
you have any *reasons* for the Brazilian editors' policy?

Nice page.

There's also a Dutch SUPER GOOF story where Ellsworth eats a super goober,
and becomes "Super Ellsworth". It's a 1-time thing, and completely unrelated
to the French "Super G?nius" that you describe.

The Dutch story is H 84121, 5 pages, written by Ruud Straatman, drawn by
Dick Matena. Published in November 1984.

Actually, Gyro's mailbox robot (who ECN calls Posty) is played as a
male. As is Little Helper. But I suppose it was time *somebody* was
outed in the Duck universe.

Rob,

"...but he did receive a newspaper every Sunday."

Aha! Elvira only had appeared on three (next to nothing!) Sunday pages at
the time, the last of which had been published a long time (one and a half
year) before Barks drew "Best Christmas". I'd say that adds to my main
argument about the possibility of Barks not being aware of the character at
all. Or maybe he had just forgotten her.

"...he only invented characters, because he NEEDED them for his current
story."

Yes, and, always assuming he didn't know about Elvira, which other of the
characters appearing in Taliaferro's strips he could have used for his
story? Gus Goose? In the strips it was obvious that Donald didn't like him.
So why visit a relative that will ultimately spoil your Xmas. Daisy? She
does obviously live too close to Donald to give Barks the opportunity of
letting all these misadventures in the snow happen. As Xmas is a family
feast he needed a beloved relative that doesn't live too close. So (not
being aware of Elvira) he chose a grandmother. It's nothing special that she
only appeared in one story, because quite a few stories (e.g. WDC 55, WDC
267, and WDC 312) contain relatives we've never heard of again. Even Scrooge
wasn't intended to be used more than once originally.

"In ALL these 38 years that I've had the story, I NEVER even imagined that
she wasn't the same Grandma."

In ALL these 9 years that I've had the story, I ALWAYS thought she's a
different character. ;-) I like your suggestion that she could be the
grandmother of HDL, regarding her "youthfulness" in contrast to the
great-grandmother Elvira. Although you don't really agree with this, either.

Frank

Please notice that Grandma is supposed to be almost half a
generation (ca. 12 years) older that Scrooge.

But as you are saying - Ludwig IS apparently of the same generation
as Scrooge, but most likely a few years younger (born sometime in
the 1870's) and thus of the SAME AGE as Scrooge's sister Matilda
(born 1871).

Whose sister? Ludwig?s sister? Scrooge?s sister?

Anyway females can give birth almost up to 50 - so there
is no biological contradiction what-so-ever in Barks'
version of the Family Tree.

1) This is Disney Comics family relations - not a real family
we are dealing with.

2) This is very special family with a very special history.
Remember that the sisters apparently left Scrooge in 1930.
Matilda may have moved to Europe and met Ludwig there.
They wouldn't keep any contact with Scrooge because of the
incident in 1930. The only other relative left in Duckburg
would then be the young Donald (who seems to have been
raised at Grandma Duck's farm), Donald's sister Della
may also have grown up at the farm - we don't know.

TO MUCH has been written by TO MANY artists about Donald's
family to even consider such a theory.

Exactly! That's why I have choose to present one particular
version in my WEB-pages about this - the Barks/Rosa version.

Hello!

Could we ask Don Rosa himself or any of the other professionals (Gary
Leach) for a comment on the report that Diamond Comics will bring back
Uncle Scrooge and Walt Disney's Comics and Stories in April? It would be
great if they start an all-Don Rosa series like the German/Ehapa one.
Goofy313g
I've a list of four authors who used a grandpa of Gyro:
*Barks, in Uncle Scrooge goes to Disneyland
*Rosa, in Lo$2 and "the Cowboycaptain of the Cutty Sark", in these three
stories, he looks like Gyro with a longer beak, a big hat, and is called
Ratchet.
*Ivan Saidenberg, Irineu Soares Rodrigues, and Verci de Mello, in "Hist?ria
de Pat?polis:
O s?culo das luzes" (B 810094) and "Nos tempos do avi?o a lenha", from
1983. In these stories, he is Prof Pardalto, with a black beard and a flat
hat (Eur?ka in French)
* Tony Strobl and Steve Steere, in "Flipsy Tootle" (S 65114), in which he
also has a beard and a flat hat, and is only seen on b&w photographs, and is
only refered as grandpa Gearloose.

Don Rosa, althought it was probably not intentionnally, made me believe that
these characters were the same, because in "the captain of the cutty Sark",
he now wears a flat hat, and it could the same cap he has in Strobl's and de
Mello's stories, and in the same story, he tells at the end that he's going
to open a bakery, and it's probably then that he moved to duckburg ( in
strobl's and de Mello's stories, he is in Duckburg). then, he could have let
his beard grow up when he arrived in Duckburg... that was Grandpa Gearloose
aka Ratchet "Eureka" Gearloose's chronology :-)

I think you're confusing the terms "canon" and "universe". As far as I
understand it, "canon" means whether or not a story actually happened.
"Universe" sums up which characters and places are usable in that
particular Disney licensee's stories.

To my knowledge, Egmont has never gone out and stated that any
particular story "didn't happen". (For example: A few years ago, they
printed my "Gall in the Family", which uses Scrooge's cousin Douglas
McDuck. The existence of Douglas contradicts other published stories,
where Scrooge is the only remaining McDuck. But still, Egmont published
my story without declaring it - or the other stories - non-canon.)

As far as the ECN universe is concerned, you mention Fethry Duck, Emil
Eagle and Ludwig Von Drake as characters you believe are currently not
used.

Sigvald, don't take this as a personal attack, but... do you ever read
the weekly? Cousin Fethry shows up all the time there, in newly produced
Danish stories.

But yeah, Emil Eagle and Ludwig are, sadly, not being used in Egmont's
production right now. The same goes for Grandma's mice Gus & Jaq as well
as Darkwing Duck, Newton, Clara Cluck and various others. A good rule of
thumb is: If you don't see certain characters in newly-produced stories
from Egmont, they're probably not using them right now. But (as in the
case of Fethry), remember to look carefully for the characters before
you conclude you don't see them!

As for why ECN don't use certain characters... Lots of reasons. All of
them pretty uninteresting, though. And who knows which "retired"
characters they may begin using again in the future.

Right. Someone living in Scotland is of about the same age as someone else
living in Austria.

Wrong. There is no knowledge of any brother, but that doesn't mean that
Donald doesn't have a brother, it just means that no brother has appeared in
any story.

Right. But you seem to treat it as a real family relation everywhere else.

Are you trying to prove that Ludwig is *not* married with Matilda? I thought
that you were trying to prove the *opposite*... Anyways:

On the 14th of November, you wrote:

That is unlikely: Della has never been mentioned in any of the Paperino
Paperotto stories, taking place on that very farm.

Right. And "TO" MUCH has been written by "TO" MANY artists about Donald's
family to consider theories about any marriages of Ludwig's.

Gladstone did 8 albums with Rosa stories, and Disney Comics did one. It
would be nice if Gemstone would continue this series (first reprinting the
stories that were only printed in the comics).

But apart from that, Gemstone could start printing all-new Rosa stories in
their comics. There are 12 stories waiting to be seen in English:

D 98202 24 pages, US "The Dutchman's Secret"
D 98346 24 pages, US "Escape From Forbidden Valley"
F PM 99001 12 pages, US "The Coin"
D 99078 33 pages, US "Quest For Kalevala"
F PM 00201 12 pages, US "Attaaaaaack!"
D 2000-002 28 pages, DD "The Three Caballeros Ride Again"
D 2000-191 17 pages, BB "The Beagle Boys Vs. The Money Bin"
F PM 01201 26 pages, US "The Sharpie of the Culebra Cut"
D 2001-024 28 pages, US "The Crown Of The Crusader Kings"
D 2001-095 13 pages, US "Forget It!"
D 2001-143 20 pages, GY "Gyro's First Invention"
D 2002-?? 26 pages, US "Dream of a Lifetime"

So we *could* have one new Rosa story a month, which would make a wonderful
year!
Of course, I *do* hope that Don will keep making new stories, to be printed
after the above.

This is the second time someone here claims that I mean
the opposite of what I am actually writing. I hope it is
not some kind of dirty trick to make me look silly here?

Anyway what I tried to say in my above statement is that
Matilda my have gone to Europe shortly after the incident
in Scrooge's Money Bin in 1930.

In Europe may have met the Austrian Ludwig von
Drake and later married him. If they married in let's
say 1931 she would be 60 years so there would not be
any children.

She may have died around 1960. If so she would have
died 89 years old (nothing special with that) and
left her (probably younger) husband Ludwig a widower.

> Why would Ludwig go to Matilda's relatives if his
> wife preferred not to meet them?

I don't know, so I can only guess:
a) Curiosity. He would like to meet the richest man on Earth.
b) In her last day's Matilda may have asked him to do it for
her so that she could die in peace.

Anyway my mother's mother had a brother who went from Norway
to Canada in 1928. He died in 1992 without ever visiting Norway
again. So when he didn't return in 64 years, I say it's
possible that Matilda just didn't return in 30 years
without any hate or bitterness as a reason for it.

And one more thing: I don't try to PROVE anything in this
matter. I just try to show that Don Rosa's idea is as good
as any idea when it comes to Ludwig's background.

Sure! Take a look at:

http://www.projesom.com.br/afaria/ancestors/Pamela_Pato.jpg
http://www.projesom.com.br/afaria/ancestors/Patrusco_Pato.jpg

BTW, Patrusco and Pamela Pato aren't relatives of the Duck Family,
so I'm wondering what family tree will you put them in...

Anyway, in Brazil many ducks who appeared in a story got
the surname (or designation) "Pato" (Duck), no matter he/she
is or not a relative of Donald Duck (called "Pato Donald" in
Brazil, which simply means "The duck named Donald" and not
"Donald from the Duck Family")

Actually, just in the last few years the Brazilian editors and
translators start worrying about those translation's incongruences
(or simple lack of surnames)...

Well, there's the case of Daisy *Duck*, who isn't Donald's
relative either, I presume... or is she?!?
