Oh yes, you did, Daniel. sorry, i seemed to forgot to answer that in my
haste to reply to the other quote you set up. btw thx for the Monty link, i
enjoyed it very much :-D *another proof that movies can also be classics
despite the visual, sound effects development that happened*

I'm taking inventory of Disney's witches and hopefully some of you can clarify a
few points for me.

1) Magica de Spell
-Scrooge nemesis who wants his No.1 Dime as she believes it to be a talisman of
great "luck." She is probably the BEST known of Disney witches in comics. Magica
has one, and sometimes two, crow(s) or raven(s) who serve as her familiar. Their
names have been inconsistent, but we have established that the most common name
for the "single" bird is Ratface. Magica currently lives in an old shack on the
side of Mount Vesuvius.

2) Mad Madam Mim
Sometimes bad, sometimes good. Originally from the film SWORD IN THE STONE, she
has a haggard cat familiar named Spitfire. At one time she and Magica were
roommates in an old castle, but now they more commonly work seperately. Currently
Mim lives in an old house in the forest. She occassionally teams up with the
Beagle Boys, but more often encounters the forest characters like Big Bad Wolf and
Brer Bear.

3) Witch Hazel or Hazel Witch
Her residence is unknown, but is presumably also somewhere in the forest. She has
no familiar of which I am aware, but she does share a rapport with her flying
broom which she calls Beelzebub. Beelzebub is a fully animated character. Her
encounters have been mostly with the Ducks and Mouses and sometimes with the other
witches. She is not fully good or evil.

4) Witch-Queen from Snow White
Another witch typically encountered in Forest-related stories. Always evil. Not
much used these days.

5) Hexis Witch
The nephew of Hazel Witch who rides a motorized broom. He loves to wreak havok on
unsuspecting victims. He is young, probably just slightly older than HDL. He has
no familiar and is not used very often in comics.

6) Minima de Spell
The young niece of Magica. Little is know of her except that she is not motivated
by the same greed as her aunt. She has befriended the Ducks in the past and is
often a major annoyance for Magica. Minima appears to often visit Magica along
with her grandmother.

7) Granny de Spell
A portrait of Whistler's Mother aptly describes her appearance. She seems to be
just an old sage who tends to annoy Magica.

8) Witch-Child
Another young girl witch, but not actually related to Magica, even though she
calls Magica her "aunt." Witch-Child has a broom with an animated dragon's head
which emmulates whatever mood Witch-Child is in. She, too, is an annoyance to
Magica.

9) Warlock
Witch-Child's brother. I know very little about him.

10) Matilda de Spell
Another neice of Magica's. She is much older than Minima, probably in her teens,
but I am not sure whether she and Minima are sisters. Matilda rides a flying
vaccuum cleaner instead of a broom and has a spider named Tarty as a familiar.
I'm not aware of her motivations (good? evil?) or her standing with Magica.

11) Nonna Caraldina?
Another granny of Magica's? Or is she the same as Granny de Spell, but somehow
revamped into a much more vibrant character???

12) Roberta
A fairly new recurring character. A friend of Magica's who likes to team-up with
her for various reasons.

13) Magda Marshbird
A creation of Geoffery Blum who lives in Duckburg and runs a Tea Shop. She is a
friend and accomplice of Magica's.

14) Samson Hex
A young owl-boy who served as apprentice to Magica and Mim for a while. Has not
been seen lately?

15) Rosalio
A large goose-like character who has a certain fascination for Magica. I'm not
sure if he is related to Magica or not or what his motivations are.

16) Master Sorcerer
A large owl-like character who appears to be the head of all the witches. I would
like to know more about him and if he and Samson are related.

17) Paddy the Leprechaun
A leprechaun who has been in a few stories with the witches. I know very little
about him.

18) Yensid the Sorcerer
The Sorcerer from FANTASIA. Not used very much?

19) Merlin the Magician
The Sorcerer from SWORD IN THE STONE, also not used very often, but his familiar,
Archimedes the Owl, has been seen more often, even apparently living with Mim?

20) Morgana McCawber
Witch from DARKWING DUCK, while not really encountered by Magica or any of the
others, she's one of my favorite characters, and technically, she is accessible to
the Duck Universe, especially the DUCKTALES universe. She is a reformed crook who
is in love with Darkwing Duck and part of his Justice Ducks Squad (which includes
Gizmoduck from DUCKTALES). She has two bats, Eek & Squeek, as familiars.

Anything to add, correct or share about these characters or others would be
welcome! :-) [this is right up your ally Eta! :-)]

Hrmph, I'm disappointed you left out my favorites! :-) I'm naturally talking
about Will, Irma, Taranee, Cornelia and Hay Lin!

Well, I can't say I have read too much of them, so I'm not the best to add
information on them - but please don't forget "W.i.t.c.h.". That comic is
highly underestimated.

I also remember a few Italian stories where we meet a grandmother, a niece and
a fiance of Magica de Spell. You may have mentioned them here, but I can't get
them to fit with your explanations, so I mentioned it anyway. Do they sound
familiar?

A few hints to remember them by:
-- When the grandma was asleep, she turned into what she was dreaming of.
-- The fiancee was allergic to ravens and sneezed fire.
-- The niece loved torturing Ratface.

As mentioned, I don't know if these characters are the same as you mention, but
at least: Here's my two cents.

Olaf,
dreaming to find a version of the picture where Will is walking naked through a
snowstorm in episode 1 of "W.i.t.c.h." in poster-size to keep over my bed.

Ooops! In my last message I called Hazel Witch's nephew "Hexis" Witch. I
meant "Witchis Witch" (which is, of course, a word play). Sorry. I don't know
where that came from, but it would make a great name.

Also, please note that what I wrote is what I "think" I know. Please feel free to
correct me where I am wrong.

Another Disney wizard appeared in italy some years ago, and he was named - I
think - Magiko Lo Stregone Zoologico, or something like that. He was a duck
with blond hair, moustaches and blue eyes, and somehow looked as a
villain-ified version of Gladstone Gander dressed as Mandrake. He was able
to morph into every animal he wanted and used to be rather in love with
Magica de Spell at the time. However, she didn't like him, and when he
discovered her greatest interest was Scrooge's Dime he blackmailed her -
saying he'd have got the Dime for her if she accepted to be his girlfriend.
I don't remember much else of the story but Magiko's final failure at his
attempt. I don't even recall the title right now. However, it was a story
published in a rather old Topolino issue. Others Italian DCMLers will surely
be able to tell you more 'bout that :)

This one is from THE PIXILATED PARROT.

Good question. I think this was discussed before, and it was suggested that the
official way of writing her name in English is "De", but if I understand the name,
it's suppose to be a faux Italian name, so I would think "de" is more accurate.
Still, it's hard to tell from comics alone since they are typically printed in ALL
CAPS its nearly impossible to tell.

Well.... some of your enjoyment anyhow... I thought the stories and art were very
well made. I would LOVE to see it published, maybe as a Graphic Novel here in the
USA. Still, it doesn't quite have the same atmosphere as a typical Disney comic,
but, neither did GARGOYLES which I also loved! Hey! Maybe W.I.T.C.H. would make
a great animated series... but I'd hate to see it ruined if overdone in anime-
style. Disney is promoting the new BIONICAL movie which seems to be a CGI-anime
film. I'm not sure I'll like it. If they chose, rather, the style of the Ghibli
Studio films like WHISPER OF THE HEART, maybe I'd watch it.

Speaking of which... (hahahahaa... I made a funny)...
I was in the local Disney Store yesterday picking up my copy of the pre-paid for
STITCH: THE MOVIE (which was wonderful), and I noticed the store was selling POWER
RANGERS toys... Huh??? Did Disney buy Bandai? Admittedly, I should have asked
the "Cast Members" but they were very busy. I also noticed that a mini-poster
came with the Stitch film showing pictures of many of the various "experiments"
that preceded #626 (Stitch) which was eerily similar to the posters for Pokemon...
OMG!!! The theme of the upcoming Disney Series, STITCH: The Animated Series, is
based on "catching ALL the other experiments".... OH NO.... Disney's gone
Pokemon!!!!! ARGH!!!! I didn't realize this....

I HATE Pokemon, Digimon, Monster Rancher, Power Rangers, Gundam, Dragonball Z...
I'm doomed. :-(

I wonder if anyone remembers this Giddy Goat character? He's an old
character probably developed by the Disney studios and was used once or
twice by Floyd Gottfredson.

I know very little about him other than what he looked like and that he
was a farmer. He appears in a cartoon drawing of THE BAND CONCERT where
he is depicted instead of the second dog-like character as a member of
Mickey's Band. The same image of Gideon in his band costume with
instrument is used in a very old set of playing cards where his name is
also stated as Giddy Goat. He appears in some old studio gags, but
probably his best known appearance is in the tale of Mickey's horse
Tanglefoot where he is a farmer who bad-mouths Tanglefoot (as does
Horace and some others) about his worth.

As I am a fan, champion and defender of some of these obscure and
forgotten characters, I was startled when I recently bought a copy of
TOPOLINO #2012 featuring the story UNCLE SCROOGE AND THE TERRIBLE KINGO
KNOGO for in the second chapter there is a character, who, for all
intents seems to be a revival of Gideon! His first name is not given,
but he and his wife are called "de Capronis", which, if I'm not
mistaken, means "The Goats" in Italian. They are chicken farmers who
load up their truck with eggs and drive into Duckburg to sell them. The
husband looks very much like Gideon except that he is obviously redrawn
in the wacky Cavazzano style. The Capronis only appear on four pages.
The last two are fairly insignificant image-wise as all we see is that
Kingo believes Mr. Caproni to be his Pappa (Kingo was raised by wild
goats) and breaks out of his holding cell. The Capronis run for their
lives and that's the last we see of them.

Here are two scans from the story J 2012 showing The Capronis and a
picture of Giddy Goat.

David or someone familiar with the story and/or Giddy Goat, could you
possibly share what you know concerning this character?
If this is an obscure homage to Giddy Goat, can you verify it and does
the wife have a name (other than "Mrs. Goat" that is)?

Maybe so, but no matter how Swedish this person claims to be, his first name
is *not* a real Swedish name. 20 typical Swedish male names are:
Anders
Bengt
Benjamin
Bo
Carl
Christer
G?ran
G?sta
Gunde

You are into a very interesting subject, but you seem to forget about one
thing here - AFAIK Magica is a sorceress *not* a real witch like most of the
other characters in your list.

There are 430 men in Sweden named Horst (and only 250 named Sigvald, but you
are not a Swede, I know)
And besides, it is not that he "claims" to be swedish, he is.

People, there's no arguing against that. No matter how Swedish the person *is*, to Sigvald it's only a "claim". Sigvald decided that the name is not Swedish, and therefore the person is not Swedish.

Sigvald, you won the prize for this month's most ridiculous DCML discussion.

Ah, well, this reminds me that I have a witches web page halfway
through updating, too... it's been halfway for several months,
actually... :-)

However, as you know, I'm not following modern Disney stuff, so
I can only help with a couple of clarifications...

>2) Mad Madam Mim
[...]
>Currently Mim lives in an old house in the forest. She occassionally

I don't know whether Mim is used at all, these days... all the
above, afaik, refers to just a bunch of Tony Strobl's stories
from the mid sixties, not enough, maybe, to become part of
the character's "lore"... dunno...

However, you forgot to mention Mim had a terrible crush for
Capt. Hook once, and she fell for the Phantom Blot as well, the
wicked old gal... :-)

>3) Witch Hazel or Hazel Witch
>Her residence is unknown, but is presumably also somewhere in

Not sure about that, especially if you mean "Forest" as one of
the estabilished environments (that's where the wolves live,
and some include also Bre'r Rabbit & co. in there, although I
think the latter really live in the suburbia-like Swamp, with
Bre'r Bear and Bre'r Fox sorta commuting).

In most italian stories, out of memory, Hazel lives either in
a cottage-like house, similar to Magica's, or in some unspecified
cave. Location is unknown, and I'm under the impression she
actually lives in another dimension and drops in "here" every
now and then to visit.

>4) Witch-Queen from Snow White
>Another witch typically encountered in Forest-related stories.
>Always evil. Not much used these days.

And I'm convinced this has to be yet another Forest, possibly
in yet another dimension... or we have to deal with a time-warp
here, if we want to place the 7 dwarfs and the Wolves in the same
environment...

>6) Minima de Spell
>Minima appears to often visit Magica along with her grandmother.

Can't say I know much of her, either... I've only read her debut
story, kindly sent to me by Michael Gilbert, and the one italian
story with her, where she appears along with *Magica's* granny,
not hers... but this ought to be checked.

>7) Granny de Spell
>A portrait of Whistler's Mother aptly describes her appearance.

>11) Nonna Caraldina?

Well, in my page I've purported Magica as having THREE grandmas,
because witches ARE different, after all... ;-)

The third would be the brazilian version, which appears to be
slightly different, character and appearance-wise, to the other
two...

But what I really think is this is the SAME character, although
tackled very differently by different authors.

>8) Witch-Child

You may want to add that she's the daughter of the Witch Of The
West. (Yes, I guess she's meant to be THAT Witch Of The West of
Oz fame)

>9) Warlock
>Witch-Child's brother. I know very little about him.

Not much to know, only two stories.

>10) Matilda de Spell
>Another neice of Magica's.

Nope. She's a cousin.

>I am not sure whether she and Minima are sisters

Definitely not.

>I'm not aware of her motivations (good? evil?)

Plain boredom, as far as I can tell... :-)

>or her standing with Magica

Sent at Magica's for apprenticing.

>14) Samson Hex
>A young owl-boy who served as apprentice to Magica and Mim for
>a while. Has not been seen lately?

Not that I know of. He only appears in a bunch of s-coded
story at all, I guess, don't think he's ever been used outside
what I call the "coven" environment (Magica & Mim)

>15) Rosalio
>A large goose-like character who has a certain fascination for

He's Magica's suitor, blindingly in love with her, much to her
annoyance.

sp: ROSOLIO

>16) Master Sorcerer
>A large owl-like character who appears to be the head of all

Never seen, but...

>... and if he and Samson are related.

don't think so.

>17) Paddy the Leprechaun
>A leprechaun who has been in a few stories with the witches.
>I know very little about him.

Thanks to David's research, we've finally found out his real,
original name to be DANNY O'DOOM.

Very little to add about him, he generally fusses about his pot
of gold. And he, too, belongs to a very short span of s-coded
witch stories, we could call them the "Schmitz Series" as
opposed to the earlier "Fletcher Series" where Samson appeared.

>19) Merlin the Magician
>The Sorcerer from SWORD IN THE STONE, also not used very often,
>but his familiar, Archimedes the Owl, has been seen more often,
>even apparently living with Mim?

I don't think this is correct. Archimedes is not a "familiar"
in the technical sense of the term, like Ratface, he's more
like a... uhm... acculturated pet, I'd say... :-)

And I'm nearly certain Mim's owl (which I must admit I don't
remember right now) is not the same... after all, Mim and
Merlin used to be fierce enemies, I can't see any half-decent
owl changing sides like that... ;-)

And, btw, I guess you're really using this term just for
convenience of "grouping" characters, but Spitfire is not much
of a "familiar" either... he's just plain pet, to me...

Cheers!
