Well, someone must be a bigger fool than me, but guess who's got the CBL, the CBLiC, The CBSV, the Norwegian edition AND the golden books, the big white ones, along with (parts of) the original American and Danish lot...
Who's that S*** for brains, that's gonna buy this edition too?
Yes, yours truly!
Hi ho, hi ho, it's off to work we go....

I don't have the CBL, and not even half of the CBLiC. And know who else doesn't even have that? Millions of other people. ;)
Barks' stuff is national treasure. It should be kept in print indefinitely. Not for us, but for all the people who haven't read it yet.
Anyway, can anyone link to an example of the "bad" European colouring referenced in the article? I honestly didn't have a problem with the CBLiC colours, and I'm kinda concerned about the angle they're talking about with this new edition. Not really sure what they're going for.

If nothing else, it sounds like this will make Barks' work MUCH more readily available for a much longer period. Every volume thusfar published of Fantagraphics' Complete Peanuts is in print and will likely remain so indefinitely, so I see no reason why this should be any different.
The only thing that irks me about this (aside from the excessively long time frame) is that the books are not being published in anything resembling chronological order. A minor complaint, however, in the long run. I'm sure they will be heart-stoppingly gorgeous.

On the picture above, they've put in vektordrawn skies, that Barks didn't actually draw.
http://rackham.dk/anmeldelse/billeder/cbsv/pink_moskitoer.jpg
Here they made the mosquitoes pink...
http://rackham.dk/anmeldelse/billeder/cbsv/cvr_x.jpg
Here they made the dirty fingerprints, the gradiated backwall And the floor AND the shadow on the floor.

This poor old man has got a red fanny (!?)
http://rackham.dk/anmeldelse/billeder/cbsv/blaa_skygger.jpg
...and the shadows are gradient yellow to blue to purple, for reasons no one can see!
These are just some examples of stuff, that are put in and is obviously NOT Barks, but some #%&¤"-photoshopper gone crazy.
The paper was shining, glittering and the colors were to bright.
I hope you get the drift...
Thanx to Rackham® for borrowing the pics

I have no problem with Egmont's colouring, nor would I with what Fantographics proposes. I will buy the Fantographics books (2 a year at about $50 US). I can accommodate 30 more hardbound books over a 15-year period. I have The CBL, and not CBLiC, but most of the Dutch coloured albums (Donald Duck Beste Verhalen) and virtually all the original US comics (except a couple giveaways (which I have in Gladstone high-quality reprints). But, it will be nice to have hardbound colour of all Barks' work.

I'm really excited about this announcement! I have some selected CBL in color from back in the day of my favorite stories, but no way I could aford them all back then, and I have no idea if they ever got around to completing that project. Now the old stuff it either too expensive or too hard to find, some of the hardcover stuff I have been able to find in local comics shops is only in b&w and if I'm going to invest in a complete Barks collection I want it in color. So I am super excited about hardcover, afordable, color editions. I am little disapointed at only 2 volumes a year, but given my limited comics budget I'm glad it won't break the bank this way. I'm also excited that these thing may be sold in actual Disney stories, to which I can only say it's about time Disney comics were sold in actual Disney stories, let alone stories by the master duck artist himself! Even with all the stuff Boom has put out the only comics I have seen in Disney stores have been the first volume of the Muppet Show.
I now also have the urge to go back and read through all my Barks stories I do have in anticipation of these new volumes, after all Fall 2011 is still a long way off. While I've read a lot of Barks's major stories, I know there are a ton I haven't read yet. He did so many!

I don't have any complete Carl Barks collection. The CBL is not possible to get (for a fair price). The CBLiC is no hardcover. And the German collection is in German ;)
I just have about 40% of Barks work in Uncle Scrooge, Comics and Stories, holiday specials and German Donald Duck and Micky Maus issues by Gemstone, Disney Comics and EHAPA.
I can't wait to get this new American collection :)

Quote from user: CoolwaterQuote from user: Dutch Duckfan Down UnderDon't get me wrong, but yet another Barks reprint? Don't you guys have the Carl Barks Library and the Carl Barks Library in Color?
It will be number five in my shelf of high-class complete Barks libraries. And I'm still young--guess I'll have to buy everything what the Barks machine will throw out until 2050 or 2060. ;) (Haven't got the mother of all Barks libraries, Another Rainbow's Carl Barks Library, unfortunately.)
Now I think about it, there's not one Barks collection I've got complete. I've got
-one book of a hardcover Dutch b/w series covering 1947 and 1948 (Alle Klassieke Verhalen)
-about 1/3 of the "Beste Verhalen series", all Barks stories in random order
-one book of the CBL (3), but that was just an incredible bargain I couldn't resist
-a few albums of the CBLiC
-one original story
Well, I'll at least try to complete the second and the last series. And about the Fantagraphics series: for 2 albums per year for the next 15 years, my mind might change coming years. It just might. :)
You just made me realize that I'll be buying Disney comics for the next 60/70 years. What a future!
Quote from user: CoolwaterQuote from user: Dutch Duckfan Down UnderI also hope they're going to reprint ALL Barks work. I've seen cases where the cover were left out, or the paintings. I think someone should do a all-Barks Library. So that's stories, covers, paintings, drawings... storyboards? Well, I guess that's not going to happen.
With its additional volumes of the caricatures, storyboards, drawings, paintings and non-Disney comics, the Norwegian edition of the Carl Barks Collection really will be such an all-Barks Library! Lucky folks up there, I wish that material would be edited here, too.
First in English, please.
Quote from user: Robb_KI can accommodate 30 more hardbound books over a 15-year period.
The only problem is, that when the set is done, you're nearing 80. Will you make it?

I must stress again: While 15 years have the prospect of a Mosaic march through the desert, the promised price of $ 25 for each volume is really pleasing--for a hardcover book of 240 pages and with additional (new!) essays and articles.
Of the European Carl Barks Collection, each single volume (280 pages) had the price of 50 Euros (ca. $ 65)--in Germany: in the Scandinavian countries the edition was due to the lower print run even pricier, as far as I know. (Binding, paper and print quality of the CBC are of course absolutely high-class.)
Of the currently running (third) Carl Barks work edition in Germany, each hardcover volume costs 25 Euros (ca. $ 33)--having 160 pages, with no additional material and with colouring and lettering largely recycled from the previous "Collection". And these books probably sell (relatively) well, are at least no absolutely "exclusive" and low print run thing ...
Of Gladstone's Carl Barks Library in Color, each soft-cover album of a bit more than 50 pages costed already $ 9 or $ 10 ... and that already quite a couple of years ago.
So the march through the desert will be at least a budget travel. Very nice. I wonder how the quality of colouring and paper will be.

Exciting news. I have most of the Gladstone color albums, but as someone already said, they are not hardbound.
Gladstone did some great hard cover collections, but those were never priced for the average person and are now 25-30 years old.
I hope they pull it off, though 15 years is a long time. That's the only part that concerns me.

That gets me thinking: how much will the books cost in 15 years? Probably not $25 anymore.

You're going too fast. 25-30 years ago there were barely any Disney comics in America (1981-1986). I think you're talking about 15-25 years ago (1986-1996).

Maybe not. But if a price increase would only follow the usual inflation it would be okay.
(Haven't got the feeling, though, that this is actually the case here the last years. I guess with the Euro I pay today prices for comics, and not only for these, I would have never payed in Mark times, that even if keeping the inflation in mind when calculating back Euro prices in Marks.)

You two meet in the middle somehow. Another Rainbow (of which Gladstone is a filiation) published its Carl Barks Library between 1983 and 1990.

Don't forget that Fantagraphics has taken on several other long term projects like Peanuts, and the prices have been stable on those, as has the quality. They're also doing Popeye and Krazy Kat and have announced Pogo, among others.
This is a quality company that will be around for a long time and knows what they are doing.

You're probably right. I hadn't to do with the editions of Fantagraphics yet, so that that publisher it is a dark horse for me.
By the way, since Gyro Gearloose was concerned in the second post in this thread if a couple of stories would be published censored or not. Another good question is if the Junior Woodchucks stories, "King Scrooge the First" and some other late stories for which Barks provided only pencil sketches would be presented in their "classic" finished versions inked by Strobl, Wright & Co., or rather with the new Barks-like inking that the masterly Daan Jippes gave them. Hopefully the latter! But this question won't be urgent until in 15 years or so anyway, I guess ... :P

It pleases me they're going to start off with some of the most desirable stories. I hope they complete all 15 years of the series and I'm still around to buy them. However, if I die or lose interest, or the company goes out of business before they complete the whole project or raises their prices sky high, then at least if I hadn't collected them all I was able to enjoy my favorite stories.
I really do like the whole idea of the project and especially the $25 price. I do wish they wouldn't reduce the size, though, but it doesn't seem that bad and I'll still buy the series. I'm already thinking in 15 years, especially, as my vision gets worse, the larger the better.
