Don Rosa's stories often include birds and and squirrels and other animals doing funny things in the background. (I often wonder if he was inspired by the gag-filled stories in the 1950s-60s issues of Mad drawn by Bill Elder, Harvey Kurtzman, Wally Wood, John Severin, Dave Berg, Mort Drucker and Al Jaffee.) William Van Horn liked to include little bugs and bees in his duck stories. Carl Barks occasionaly drew a framed painting on a wall in Donald's house with characters hanging out of the frame in the style of 20th-century Bringing Up Father comic-strip artist George McManus. On other occasions, the frame would hold a picture of two dozen "Donald faces" crowded together. Sometimes the character in the picture frame seemed to be reacting to something Donald was doing. One of my favorite background drawings showed a fish bowl with one huge fat fish that filled the entire bowl.
I appreciate the larger-sized printings of Disney comics, especially the more highly detailed stories such as Rosa's. I'm old enough to remember when daily newspaper comic strips were printed large enough to be read without the aid of a magnifying glass and the Sunday comics were six to ten pages, with three strips per page. Now the Sunday comics are a measly four pages and each page contains seven or eight shrunk-down strips, some of them printed vertically instead of horizontally. Because comic strips are printed so tiny now, the artists keep the drawings very simple. The detailed artwork that typified Pogo, Tarzan, Prince Valiant and other such strips will never be seen again.

By the by, I actually picked up "Pixelated Parrot" from Fanta at ECCC, and can put to rest some speculation about inclusion of non-Barks writing or art; this volume contains a bit of both.

Not sure if anyone else has picked up the latest Barks Volume, "The Pixilated Parrot" (which is great, btw - pretty much a straight run of classic, long Donald adventure stories), but in the 'Story Notes' in the back of the book, there is a reference to one-page Scrooge gag called "Wasted Words" that will be appearing in "Volume 31." Considering this gag comes from US 61, and Barks's official run (not including 'Horsing around with History') ended about ten issues later, I think it's safe to say we'll have at least 32 volumes in this series when all is said and done. At the current rate of 2 per year, that means it will be Christmas of 2027 before the series is completed! Hopefully they will increase the pace when they get through the Gottfredson and Rosa books in a few years!

Fantagraphics seems to be pretty committed to their schedules (see Peanuts and Dick Tracy).
Something tells me 2027 is going to be about right.

When the next printing of "Andes" is published, I`d like some other changes along with the All-Barks "South Seas".
The yellows are more yellow here than in the other volumes. Muting.
The adventures -> 10-pagers -> gags lineup REALLY bug me. I wish they could rearrange it so that it`d look like the other volumes do.

I can only imagine. The thought of the series ending 12 years from now seems a bit daunting. I almost can't even get my head around it.
I'd even settle for three releases a year just to speed things up. But I certainly understand the business side of things.
