(I always felt the same way about the Road Runner and Wile E. Coyote cartoons.) Personally, I always preferred the Scrooge stories with globetrotting high adventure. "Lost in the Andes" is a much better story, to me.

I think the hardcovers are worth it, even if the stories are available elsewhere, simply because these are the first tamper-free collections of Barks' work ever published in America. Gladstone's reprints, good as they were, could be irritating every time you ran across an obviously re-lettered or re-touched panel: the "Scotsman's tip" changing into "One of my tips" in Micro-Ducks from Outer Space, the heavy redrawing of Bombie, Foola Zoola, and their fellow-tribesmen, the bizarre alterations of Treasure of Marco Polo (whoever was behind that one must have really had a political fixation). As serious Duck collectors, we should all be behind the new series.

I just got volume 3. This is really great work by Fantagraphics!
My only complain is that the cover gets scratches very easily. The books should be shrink wrapped. A yearly box set like for the Mickey Mouse books would be even better. Today it's nearly impossible to find a copy in mint condition. I tried it at online shops and local book shops.

Morequack - I too have sold off 90% of my comics in general in the past few years but still have bought up these CB volumes. They are really good reads for the money and are sturdy - not as finicky as reading single issues. I enjoy having them on my regular shelf of books and going back to them every few months. Perhaps in our older age, we'll never get to finish the set, but I look at it like I do with the Simpson DVD sets. They will be coming out until I am blind most likely. These CB books are really entertaining reads that bring back the nostalgia and adventure of the halcyon days of comics with great care in presentation. Plus, for the price (most can be snagged on Amazon for $20-$25 within the first few months of release,) you're looking at about $50 a year tops for the bi-annual release. I'm very happy to have them around.

Maybe I'll rethink it, thanks. On a somewhat adjacent issue, Amazon now charges tax and for CA that's 9% and soon to go up! Really burns me up! CA is 2nd highest--soon to be the highest--sales taxed state in the Union! :mad:

9% sales tax doesn??t sound too bad if you think of Europe. Germany has 19% on most things. Denmark and Sweden have 25% sales tax. For several years, my now-former neighbor was treated for cancer. For free. If she had had to pay for the treatments herself, she would have been unable to... and would have died years ago. So I can't be upset about paying my taxes.
