Yesterday I finally got the "The Old castle secret" volume.
As for the title story goes - I haven't read this One in ages. I love how climatic the castle is and it's great to see the Ducks on their very first treasure hunt with Scrooge. I know it's just two panels but it's interesting to see Scrooge trying to shot somebody with this type of gun... Something the European censorship would replace with him poinitng I suppose?
Speaking of censoreship...
I glad to be able to read uncut version of Barks "Darkest Africa". I'm not supprise why it was shown only in censored version for year but to me those stories are historicaly significan and since I'm a adult I can deal with racial depiction of African trybes, so I prefer it this way. It's very interesting to see the story as the author oryginaly intended.
I will propably save my money for Chrismas and order the box with both Chrismas volumes :)

I wonder if there is any way to get the box itself if you already have one volume and the other preordered. I don't want to buy anything twice, but that sure is a nice looking slipcase.

You know, if you get the box set, you won't be able to display all the volumes in chronological order. That might not mean anything to a lot of people, but I feel like maybe it would to the kind of person sufficiently concerned with appearances to order a box set. :p

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who wrestled with the Christmas Box Set question. I finally decided I wanted to have the box enough to buy the set even though I already had the Christmas in Shacktown volume. Amazon has a special price on the set right now. It isn't too much more for the box set and then I'll have a spare copy I can travel with and not worry about or give away to someone. Through the years it seems I'm always buying Carl Barks stories over and over again anyway so what's one more time.

I preordered the box set as well. My spare copy will be a Christmas present for someone else.

As a fan who has been put through a similar ringer before, a lot, this is not really a pattern I would want any company to think is okay.

Anyone who is that finicky would likely want to keep the chronological order AND also have the Box case. So, they would probably just buy both, and keep both "Christmas for Shacktown" issues, one inside the box set, displayed separately from the chronological set, That would cost only about $20.00 US more to have the extra copy. That isn't much money these days. I have bought both, but sold my first copy for my original cost, and now, I will display "Christmas on Bear Mountain" NOT inside the box, but in its chronological position. I will place the chronological issue just before "Christmas for Shacktown" inside the box, in its place, to keep the set cronologically correct.

Wait, so you're going to have a box, but it will only contain one of the books it's designed to contain? That strikes me as the very definition of pointlessness (also, it doesn't address the fact that, in a long line of books, it's gonna look weird if just two of them are boxed. Them's the facts).

Well, I want the box/cover, and I don't want to pay for 2 "Christmas for Shacktowns", -so it's my best alternative. If I want to see the 2 appropriate boxes inside the cover, I can just switch them again. If I want to see all the books without the one box, I can remove the box. Ideally, they could have made boxes for ALL the pairs of books (as for The Gottfredson Mickey Mouse set).

That would be the best. The Peanuts and Mickey Mouse box sets look great.

Sure, I'd like it if there were boxes for all of 'em, but given their dubious insistence of publishing the books out of order, that would just have gotten really confusing. But as it stands, a box like this seems to basically be trying to appeal to people who AREN'T committed fans but who just like the idea of having two Christmas-themed books (though not really) in a box and whose minds chronology issues don't even cross. Meh, is all I can say to that.

(Although come to think of it, I do have to laugh--there is absolutely no logical reason why comics collections SHOULD come in boxes of two, yet Fantagraphics has somehow created this need, convinced us it's just the way things ought to be, and made a nice profit off it, I should think.)

Fantagraphics has convinced me that a box set is the way to go - it's about 30 bucks cheaper than buying the books individually.
And Geo, I'm pretty sure there's a ten page Scrooge story in your post.
