Got me a shiny new copy of the fourth volume today. Only three adventures in this one, but hey, uncensored "Darkest Africa." Woo. I must say, I question Fantagraphics' decision to use some close variation of pea-green for all of the spines thusfar, though if the above image is to be believed, it looks like the fifth book will break from that tradition.

I was surprised too; I had the vague idea that it wasn't out 'til summer. I ordered it direct from Fantagraphics, which I suppose made the difference.

I'm not surprised Robb. I read the uncensored version once online and I don't think there's much of a difference.

My pre-ordered Amazon.com copy has shipped; looking forward to it--especially for Darkest Africa, but also looking forward to having a copy again of Rocket Race to the Moon (lost my old Gladstone DDA #5 reprint of it).

If I still had all of my old Disney comics...I wouldn't have space for much else. I had issues going back to Whitmans from the late 70's, most of the Gladstone and Disney Comics Walt Disney's Comics and Stories/Donald/Scrooge/DuckTales comics (and a good number of Mickey Mouse issues, but not all of them), through the first few Gemstone books. When I moved, most of them got left behind, except for the Carl Barks Library hardcovers. Eventually those were sold off due to financial needs at the time. The comic collector's bug hit me again with a few of Gemstone's later Scrooge trade paperbacks, Boom's Disney Classics hardcovers, and now Fantagraphics' Barks and Gottfredson books, as well as IDW/Yoe Books' "The Carl Barks Big Book of Barney Bear". I just ordered my copy of "The Old Castle's Secret" today. I'm glad Fantagraphics has put out so many of the Donald Duck stories first, as those are my favorites. I am hoping they do another Uncle Scrooge volume next year, but it's hard to complain about 1940's Barks stories as they are some of the Duck Man's most energetic work.

Just FYI, the reinker of "Darkest Africa" was Dick Vlottes (not Flotes), and "Darkest Africa" isn't actually in V1 of Fantagraphics' Donald series. When it eventually does appear, Fantagraphics fully intends to use the Barks version.

But now to the immediate situation: "Race to the South Seas." My boss and co-editor on the Gottfredson Library, Gary Groth, edits Fantagraphics' Barks Library, and he's asked me to help him explain what happened here. I would have done so on Friday, except that Gary has had some health crises in his family and was unable to confirm everything for me until this morning.

Fantagraphics' plan for their Donald V1 was to use a newly recovered all-Barks version of the "South Seas" story, because I had a lead on where original line art photostats could be found. Gary informed Frank Stajano and Leonardo Gori, the writers of the story's annotations, that the original would be in the book??and asked them to write their commentary appropriately.

Alas, I *couldn't* acquire the original version by press time??so my 2006 partial restoration (from Gemstone's WALT DISNEY TREASURES Vol 1) was used in Donald V1 instead. It's actually a mix of Barks and Jippes, and Gary amended Stajano's and Gori's article to describe that.
Unfortunately, due to a production error, the older version of the Stajano and Gori article ended up in the book??still announcing the original version of the story??and Fantagraphics' ad team picked up on this without knowing about the mistake.

Gary tells me that he'd like to apologize to Frank and Leonardo, as well as readers. I had Gary notify the ad team on Friday, which is why the Facebook comment disappeared first.

As for the rest of my involvement??I really *don't* have much to do with the Fantagraphics Barks series, but I do research story sources, and I'm still attempting to recover the all-Barks version of "South Seas." Presuming everything works out, it will make its way into a later printing of Donald V1.
According to Fantagraphics, a new printing of "Lost in the Andes" is available from July 2013. Does anyone know if the new printing is an exact copy of the first book, or are things fixed/changed?

I would love to get a new printing with an all-Barks version of "Race to the South Seas!".
