You wanna see some REALLY dire Western coloring, just take a look at any of Dark Horse's color Little Lulu reprints. Color that only approximately fits in the space its supposed to go, random blobs of ink here and there for no reason...not a pretty sight. It would obviously be completely unacceptable if the Barks books looked like that.
Coincidentally, my grandpa's collection is not only Disney, but also Little Lulu comics. We have the whole Dark Horse reprint collection. I'm fairly sure that the color ones are scanned from actual comic books, which explains the color problems, whereas the black-and-white lulu ones were from photostats provided by Another Rainbow, who had used them in the Little Lulu Library in (the 90's? Not sure).

I can understand that the attention to colour given by SDL would make this printing better. I agree on these types of improvement and attention to "realistic" colouring.
But that could be achieved through the "dot colouring" that fantasgraphics is using. No need for depthless plane colouring, or the use of computer gradients as a mean to counterbalance that depthless.

Trail of the Unicorn is the next issue, after Christmas on Bear Mountain. That makes it the 4th Donald Duck release in a row.
I'm going to bet that "Only a Poor Old Man" didn't sell as well as the other ones. That's one explanation. Of the 6 first issues, only 1 is a Uncle Scrooge title?
What do you guys think? Do you think it has something to do with the new Don Rosa Library? I guess that could be it. 2 Uncle Scrooge titles in June could confuse the casual public.

Warning: What you may be about to read could be considered spoiling on some level, but I hope and think most Barks-enthusiasts will find it amusing and/or interesting.

The combination of too much anticipiation, too boring studies and too frequent spare-time slowly evolved the following theories in my mind.
My starting point is that each volume must be somewhere around 200 pages of comics, that they are chronological and that it must have a prominent story as cover. Like the four volumes already published. Each volume theorized here meet these requirements.
My knowledge on stories, chronology and existing volumes comes from articles on the subjects as well as the books themselves. The Barks-index on wiki was very useful.
I theorized that «Trail of the Unicorn» would be number eight and that «Pirate Gold» would be number one before they were confirmed, so that`s two down. Time will show how many more I`ll hit.

Theory and facts:
Vol.1: Pirate Gold.
1942-43 has a likely amount of pages. The title is confirmed in a reply by Gary Groth
Vol.2: Mystery of the Swamp
1944-45. Probable title.
Vol.3: The Terror of the River
Title is the only adventure-title in the following period (1945-46)
Vol.4: Maharajah Donald
Much like vol.3 (1946-47)
Vol.5: Christmas on Bear Mountain
Earliest confirmed story is "Volcano Valley" from May 1947. Volume ends in December 47.
Vol.6: The Old Castle`s Secret
Jan-Nov.48
Vol.7: Lost in the Andes
Dec.48-Aug.49
Vol.8: Trail of the Unicorn
Aug.49-Mar.50. Latest confirmed story is "Serum to Codfish Cove" from March 50. The volume could go longer but that one being the last fits well page-wise
Vol.9: In Ancient Persia/The Magic Hourglass/Vacation Time
Three likely titles of the rest of 1950, which has only 9 stories, but 7 long, so it fits. Looks like it`l be a fun volume.
Vol.10: In Old California
Probable title of Jan-Nov.51
Vol.11: A Christmas for Shacktown
Nov.51-Sep.52.
Vol.12: Only A Poor Old Man
Mar.52-Jun.54
Vol.13: Trick or Treat
Following vol.11 (the previous Donald-volume) with ca 200 pages from 1952-53.
Vol.14: ?
The opposite of vol.9. The 1953-54 Donald-period consist only of 10-pagers
Vol.15: The Seven Cities of Cibola
The rest of 54 and all of 55 must be used to fill this next Scrooge-volume. And what a volume it will be! It is almost sad with all those classics in the same volume. "Cibola" will become the cover-story because of the connection to Lucas, Spielberg and Indiana Jones. It is also the first Scrooge-story not published in "Only A Poor Old Man"

Halfway through and I`m pretty certain I am more right than wrong. The second half is literaly a whole another story. It`s a mess of Gyro, Daisy, Grandma and almost no long Donald-stories. Only Scrooge continues more or less as before. Will the new lead characters get their own volumes? If not, will they be under Scrooge or Donald? Will the stories made partly by Barks late in his career (primarily Woodchucks) be included? Too many what-ifs and how`s to make qualified guesses.

I`ll end this by guessing some titles of the volumes between 16-30:
- Land Beneath the Ground
- Forbidden Valley
- The Mines of King Solomon
- Island in the Sky
- The Midas Touch
- North of the Yukon
- The Phantom of Notre Duck
Most of these are Scrooge-stories and some of them are so close together that they`ll exclude one of the others if picked. If that was understandable.

Now I`m off to play some football/soccer. (Just to make clear that I do other stuff in my life besides intricate, detailed and time-consuming Donaldism!) Enjoy this nerdiness or laugh at/pity the nerd who made it :D

Given how few late Donald adventures there are, "Forbidden Valley" and "Secret of Hondorica" seem inevitable--crud, maybe even "Titanic Ants!?" But at a certain point, if it's really considered desirable that the books should be broken up by character and that each must be named after a story, there's no way around it: you're going to have to start using ten-pagers (or even fewer--though I can easily imagine a complete Gyro book just called "The Madcap Inventor" or "Inventor of Anything" or like that). That'll be where things begin to seem REALLY arbitrary.

A quick look through inducks indicates that the Grandma Duck's Farm Friends and Daisy Duck's Diary stories that Barks drew ought to fill up just one volume combined (and a relatively short volume at that). Just give it a title like <i>Grandma and Daisy?</i> I don't know--I just feel like it would be a stretch to use one of these rather insubstantial things as a title story, and besides, I personally would prefer that they not be given non-Barks titles (even if I like the stories themselves).
I would assume that they'll just lump "Pawns of the Loup Garou," "A Day in a Duck's Life," "Officer for a Day" and "Horsing Around with History" in with the Junior Woodchucks stories. Combined, this material ought to take up two volumes.

I would like a Daisy-volume and a Gyro-volume, I find them fairly decent, but I never was much of a fan of the Grandma Duck-stories. Still I'l have them for completion purposes. I'm indifferent to The Woodchucks but really like Hang Gliders Be Hanged and Horsing Around With History.
I'm still in a state of fear of the Library not reaching completion, for what ever reason, so I'm all for what ever sells best first
