They are still doing that, but because they're separated in to Donald Duck and Scrooge, you can't ever actually get the entirety of the comics in their strict chronological order: Just "Donald Duck comics from a period of 1948-1950" vs. "Uncle Scrooge Comics from 1952-1953", roughly speaking.

It's not horrible, and it's great for mass market, but it still means that I'd save my money for Another Rainbow's collection if given the chance.

Not chronological, but it's better for me since I hate the coloring of the Fantagraphics Barks stuff with a fiery passion. It damn near ruins the collection for me.

The black and white is actually preferable for me to see Barks' art as he drew it, but a color edition like SDL's in the old... I think it was Gladstone? collection would be great for my shelf.

I'd love to have one of the European editions, but since I only speak one language, and importing is such a nightmare... ah well. I really am glad Fantagraphics is publishing these volumes though, even if the formatting isn't what I'd hope for.

Well... if you look at the cover of Lost in the Andes, that one panel has five coloring errors in it. All of them deliberate, to remain true to the original comics.

1. The grass beneath Donald's feet is brown.
2. The stone is green.
3. Louie and Dewey's caps aren't colored in.
4. Donald's trim is white, which kind of makes his character design look unfinished
5. On my printing, the lower righthand corner has a either a coloring screwup where part of the green stone turns white, or a straight printing error.

Normally I'd be fine with adhering to the original colors, but when Barks had nothing to do with the colors and nothing good to say about those colors, what on earth is the point of recreating them, errors and all?

It makes the whole thing look cheap and shoddy, even in its historical accuracy, because that's what the original coloring was: stuff done on the cheap, churned out as quickly as possible without regard for consistency.

I heard Barks complimented SDL's coloring - I would much rather have seen that, as it hews closer to the creator's vision, which is what I actually care about.

Really, I could go either way, but I do think there's value in preserving the original colorings, which would otherwise be lost to time.

Agree! At first I wasn't very happy, but after reading the first book, I loved the coloring.
I was the same, upon opening the color disappointed me, but now I like it.

Still, if they made a printing of the next one with SDL coloring, I would probably get it instead

It may evoke that response from you, but it doesn't from me. When I'm noticing the coloring without prompting, rather than seeing a completed picture, I end up taken from the story. And very little does more to make me notice the coloring than seeing a series of mistakes within it. Even when I show this to little kids when I'm reading comics with them, I sometimes get that question and have to make up some answer to keep the story making sense to htem.

I am certainly glad people are enjoying it, the comics are great. But in terms of historical value I have little love for something which detracts from the way the creator has actively spoken against. One could make the same argument that there's no need to have had the Back to the Klondike flashback pages inserted: After all, that's not how they were originally printed.
