Too bad. Well, I hope there will be a later printing which will include the completed original artwork. I would by a second copy, just for that.

What exactly is the issue with Race to the South Seas? I have the edition but I haven't read that in particular.
Also, is Race's printing in Walt Disney Treasures the original? I believe outside of the Fantagraphics thats the nicest printing I have of it

The problem with the Race to the South Seas is that Fantagraphics didn't have the original art when they initially published so they had to some of Daan Jippes' touch ups to fill-in the missing sections. They state they have all the original art now and said they will use it when reprinting the that volume.
The Walt Disney Treasures uses Daan Jippes' version.

The original Barks inks and photostats of "Race To The South Seas" have been lost, and only a partially reconstructed version exists. So, some pages have inking by Daan Jippes (and, perhaps still some that were re-inked by Dick Vlottes?). I seem to remember that a 100% Barks version now exists again. But that they did not yet have it available when this set went to press.

As I note in it, the 2006 Walt Disney Treasures actually uses a semi-restored mix of Jippes and Barks, rather than pure Jippes. The Fantagraphics version, in both printings so far, is this exact same mix. (We have, in fact, recovered most of the original Barks line art now, but a few pages are still missing??so we couldn't have it ready in time for our second printing.)
Rob: There is no Dick Vlottes version of "South Seas." I believe you're thinking of "Darkest Africa," where Jippes and Vlottes both worked on the Dutch redraw.
For "Darkest Africa," after a lot of detective work and some exhausting reconstruction efforts, I'm proud to report that our Fantagraphics edition is essentially all Barks, all the way through. (We had to use Jippes/Vlottes versions of a few background details to fill in the edges of occasional panels, where an Italian source had slightly trimmed the Barks linework. But otherwise??original!)

Well thanks for the detailed info. Well, the mix was done pretty well at least. Jippes can imitate Barks's style nicely when required.

So, under the Christmas tree on the Bear Mountain cover, there (the picture is from "Three Good Little Ducks"), who can tell me what that red thing is? Not the sticklike thing with holes, presumably that's a toy flute, though I don't know why it has a little offshoot. The bigger thing on the right. I have long wondered.... Sometimes it's a challenge to identify the toys of the 1940's.
